To understand the profound changes in the modes of public political debate over the past decade, this volume develops a new conception of public spheres as spaces of resonance emerging from the power of language to affect and to ascribe and instill collective emotion. Political discourse is no longer confined to traditional media, but increasingly takes place in fragmented and digital public spheres. At the same time, the modes of political engagement have changed: discourse is said to increasingly rely on strategies of emotionalization and to be deeply affective at its core. The book Unsettling Empathy has come into being during a period of increasing cultural pessimism, where we witness the spread of populism and the rise of illiberal democracies that hark back to nationalist and ethnocentric narratives of the past. Because of this changed landscape, this book makes an important contribution to seeking fresh pathways toward an ethical practice of living together in light of past agonies and current conflicts. Within the specific context of working with groups in conflict, this book urges for an (ethical) posture of unsettling empathy. Empathy, which plays a vital role in these processes, is a complex and complicated phenomenon that is not without its critics who occasionally alert us to its dark side. The term empathy needs a qualifier to distinguish it from related phenomena such as pity, compassion, sympathy, benign paternalism, idealized identification, or voyeuristic appropriation. The word “unsettling” is just this crucial ingredient without which I would hesitate to bring empathy into our conversation.

Das menschliche Leben kristallisiert sich in seinen individuellen und kollektiven, privaten und öffentlichen Manifestationsformen nicht nur um die Semantik(en) von Freiheit, Gleichheit und Brüderlichkeit herum. Das Primat einer friedlichen Koexistenz von verschiedenen ›Heimatwelten‹ und der Nächstenliebe wird in Zeiten gespaltener Gesellschaften oft in sein Gegenteil verkehrt – der Mensch braucht dem Anschein nach immer jemanden, nach dem er ›treten‹ kann. Am Beispiel literatur-, kultur- und sprachwissenschaftlicher Analysen wird einerseits hass(an)getriebenen Gemengelagen von Herkunft, Ethnie und Nationalität, Kultur, ›System‹ und Weltanschauung, Konfessions- und Religionszugehörigkeit, Geschlecht, Sexualität und Körperästhetik nachgegangen. Andererseits werden die Denkfiguren von Provenienz, (Un-)Sichtbarkeit und Erfahrungsintensität des Hasses sowie die Frage nach Reziprozität im Sinne von Präventions- und Abwehrmechanismen kritisch hinterfragt. The area of tension in interpersonal relationships casts, loaded with hatred, its pathological shadows. Human life emerges in its individual and collective, private and public manifestation forms not only around the semantics of freedom, equality and fraternity. The primacy of a peaceful coexistence of diverse 'homelands', charity and altruism is frequently turned into its exact opposite during the periods of split societies, since there seems to exist a common human need to always trample on someone. On the one hand, by means of literary, cultural and linguistic analyses, hate-driven conflict situations based on origin, ethnic group and nationality, culture, 'system' and world view, denomination and religious affiliation, gender, sexuality and body aesthetics are investigated. On the other hand, the concepts of provenance, (in)visibility and intensity of hatred experiences as well as the reciprocity question in terms of prevention and defense mechanisms are critically questioned.

As the figure of Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) becomes so entrenched in the Modernist canon that he serves as a major reference point for poets and critics alike, the time has come to investigate poetry and poetics after him. The ambiguity of the preposition is intentional: while after may refer neutrally to chronological sequence, it also implies ways of aesthetically modeling poetry on a predecessor. Likewise, the general heading of poetry and poetics allows the sixteen contributors to this volume to range far and wide in terms of poetics (from postwar formalists to poets associated with various strands of Postmodernism, Language poetry, even Confessional poetry), ethnic identities (with a diverse selection of poets of color), nationalities (including the Irish Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney and several English poets), or language (sidestepping into French and Czech poetry). Besides offering a rich harvest of concrete case studies, Poetry and Poetics after Wallace Stevens also reconsiders possibilities for talking about poetic influence.
