Journalist Seyward Darby takes the reader deep inside the lives of three women whose experience in the white nationalist movement pulls back the curtain on racial and political extremism in America today Beginning in December 2016, journalist Seyward Darby began working to find, meet, and understand the women of the so-called "alt-right." With women dominating the formal resistance to the Trump administration, most notably through the Women's Marches, Darby wanted to know - why were women, at the same time, increasingly joining a movement that espouses racism and anti-feminism, and who are they? Over the course of fourteen months, as Darby met, interviewed, and researched dozens of alt-right women, she began to piece together surprising conclusions that only raised more questions. Many of the radicalized women had come from the left, not the right; many consciously rejected a feminism they had previously espoused. Darby wondered: How do toxic rightwing ideas spread and become knitted into communities? How do people become swept up in movements that seek to limit their individual rights? And how does the involvement of women change the way we understand this movement? Darby's book will seek to answer these questions through the story of three notable white nationalist women, all prominent voices in positions of power that struck Darby as capturing the complexities of the present-day movement. All three were born in 1979 to middle-class families, and later radicalized after 9/11. Recreating each woman's childhood and young adulthood, Darby will investigate the circumstances that would eventually lead to their radicalization, while weaving in relevant historical and political context to show how these women draw on and repackage ideas championed by the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazi Party. At the same time, Darby s an untold history of women's vital roles in white nationalism over the last century. Finally, she asks how we can confront hate groups, and what it takes for a woman to leave.

Katja Varsten yearns for her older sister to be a loving confidant, but ill-tempered Ingrid falls far short of that ideal. When Katja asks why Ingrid acts so hateful, Mama replies that she was "born with a kernel of meanness." After Papa moves the family from Germany to America, Katja wonders if there is another reason for her sister's dark side, because Mama doesn't seem to love Ingrid. How is this possible? A mother should love her child no matter what, Katja reasons, even one who came into the world screaming with rage. Why doesn't Mama love Ingrid? This compassionate tale follows Katja's evolution from a naive German girl to an American teenager catapulted into adulthood by tragedy and finally to a young woman striving to define herself in a fast-changing society. Amid the tumultuous World War II era, Katja copes with death, madness and immorality in her family and the world. Through it all, her sister Ingrid is one constant Katja wishes would change-from sharp-tongued rival to nurturing best friend-but in the end it is Katja who must change. Only then can she understand her sister, and ultimately herself."

Journalist Seyward Darby's "masterfully reported and incisive" (Nell Irvin Painter) exposé pulls back the curtain on modern racial and political extremism in America telling the "eye-opening and unforgettable" (Ibram X. Kendi) account of three women immersed in the white nationalist movement. After the election of Donald J. Trump, journalist Seyward Darby went looking for the women of the so-called "alt-right" -- really just white nationalism with a new label. The mainstream media depicted the alt-right as a bastion of angry white men, but was it? As women headlined resistance to the Trump administration's bigotry and sexism, most notably at the Women's Marches, Darby wanted to know why others were joining a movement espousing racism and anti-feminism. Who were these women, and what did their activism reveal about America's past, present, and future? Darby researched dozens of women across the country before settling on three -- Corinna Olsen, Ayla Stewart, and Lana Lokteff. Each was born in 1979, and became a white nationalist in the post-9/11 era. Their respective stories of radicalization upend much of what we assume about women, politics, and political extremism. Corinna, a professional embalmer who was once a body builder, found community in white nationalism before it was the alt-right, while she was grieving the death of her brother and the end of hermarriage. For Corinna, hate was more than just personal animus -- it could also bring people together. Eventually, she decided to leave the movement and served as an informant for the FBI. Ayla, a devoutly Christian mother of six, underwent a personal transformation from self-professed feminist to far-right online personality. Her identification with the burgeoning "tradwife" movement reveals how white nationalism traffics in society's preferred, retrograde ways of seeing women. Lana, who runs a right-wing media company with her husband, enjoys greater fame and notoriety than many of her sisters in hate. Her work disseminating and monetizing far-right dogma is a testament to the power of disinformation. With acute psychological insight and eye-opening reporting, Darby steps inside the contemporary hate movement and draws connections to precursors like the Ku Klux Klan. Far more than mere helpmeets, women like Corinna, Ayla, and Lana have been sustaining features of white nationalism. Sisters in Hate shows how the work women do to normalize and propagate racist extremism has consequences well beyond the hate movement.
