Excerpt from Haunted Places in England I AM not a psychometrist - at least not to any great extent. I cannot pick up a small object - say an old ring or coin - and straightway tell you its history, describing all the people and incidents with which it has been associated. Yet, occasion ally, odd things are revealed to me through some strange ornament or piece of furniture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from More Haunted Houses of London The whole system of education in England is rotten to the core. In training the young the brain only is taken into consideration, the character is left to take care of itself. So long as the boy is clever, so longi as he succeeds at his lessons, passes a high standard, and takes scholarships and degrees, and is, in a word, in a position to make money, that is all that those responsible for his education require of him. N 0 one 1 teaches him kindness, or gentleness, or humanity, because these are qualities that, under our present system, do not encourage money-making, but tend rather to retard it. Besides, how can we possibly impart to others what we do not possess ourselves. If character - that is to say, really good character character that is thoroughly humane and charitable were suddenly made the basis upon which our Cabinet Ministers, our pedagogues, and preachers should hold office, how many of those holding such offices to-day could be re-elected? Very few, if any. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Haunted Houses: Tales of the Supernatural; With Some Account of Hereditary Curses and Family Legends But, nevertheless, the era of the haunted house has long been on the wane. There is too much intellectual priggishness prevalent nowadays for the fine old crusted tales Of the Moated Grange and its Spectral inhabitants to attract more than an amused tolerance, as things only fitting for children. To an age which knows so much more than was known fifty years ago, and therefore presumes that it has arrived at a complete knowledge of all there is to know in heaven and earth, talk of Spirits is - what a more subject was, in the words of St. Paul, to the Greeks foolishness. In the field of true-life ghost stories, the English master was Harry Price (b. 1881). By far the most famous case in Price1s long career was that of Borley Rectory. This beautifully bound volume, which details this investigation, is a reprint of the original pub. in 1940. Borley is a tiny village in Essex, about 60 miles NE of London. The church was built in the 12th century. The rectory across the street was haunted chiefly by the figure of a nun who walked across the garden. Also appearing was a spectral carriage and team of horses driven by a headless coachman. Price reported that Borley appeared to be afflicted with classic poltergeists as well. He lived in the rectory for a year, and concluded that they really were supernatural manifestations.
