War Berlin als Reichshauptstadt 1871-1945 finanziell besser gestellt als heute? - Bisher hat sich kaum eine historische Arbeit zum Thema Hauptstadt intensiv mit der Frage ihrer Finanzierung auseinandergesetzt. In dieser Studie wird erstmals durch eine Modellrechnung anhand des konkreten Zahlenmaterials analysiert, wie Berlin als Hauptstadt finanziert wurde und wie sich die Hauptstadtfunktion auf die wirtschaftliche Gesamtrechnung der Stadt auswirkte. Nach einer Definition hauptstadtrelevanter Geldtransfers und der Beschreibung der Entwicklung des Hauptstadtausbaus (Verwaltungsbauten und Personal) werden die Haushaltspläne Preußens und des Deutschen Reiches systematisch auf alle haushaltsrelevanten Zahlungen untersucht und mit der städtischen Entwicklung Berlins verglichen. Die Studie zeigt, dass vor 1945 exorbitante Summen von Reich und Preußen in die wirtschaftliche Gesamtrechnung der Stadt flossen.

Jahrhunderts gelang es der German Community von Washington, DC, fast mühelos zwischen den Polen „Integration in die amerikanische Gesellschaft“ und „Konstituierung als ethnische Gruppe“ zu agieren und diese an sich widersprüchlichen Tendenzen in sich zu vereinen: Das Hineinwachsen in das hauptstädtische Gefüge erfolgte paradoxerweise vor allem durch den Aufbau einer im öffentlichen Raum stark sichtbaren ethnischen Gemeinde. Kernelement des Integrationsprozesses war dabei die Entwicklung einer interessengeleiteten, hybriden Identität, die sich aus den Identitäten als Deutsche, Deutschamerikaner und Hauptstadtbewohner zusammensetzte und mit einem starkem Amerikapatriotismus verwoben war.
