De haven van Antwerpen telt vandaag de dag 65.000 voltijdse banen en genereert bijna 3% van het bruto binnenlands product. Over de manier waarop dit economische complex tot stand kwam, is maar weinig bekend - behalve dat er sinds 150 jaar een bijna explosieve groei moet hebben plaatsgevonden. Haven in de branding analyseert voor het eerst het tijdspad,de oorzaken en gevolgen van deze groei op basis van de goederen-stromen en de toegevoegde-waardecreatie. Ook de groei bij inter-nationale concurrenten Rotterdam en Hamburg komt aan bod. Centraal staat de vraag hoe de haven van Antwerpen goederen-stromen kon aantrekken. Multinational Enterprise and Transnational Regions offers an innovative approach to the study of the history of transnational economic regions. The Rhine valley is such a region comprising the cities and areas along the Rhine river and its tributaries. The transition from coal to oil that unfolded between 1945 and 1973 rapidly transformed the region, shattering some of the old river-based connections and creating new ones with the introduction of large-scale cross-border oil pipelines. Multinational enterprises shaped these new regional connections but divergent national government responses gave rise to differentiated development in different parts of the Rhine valley. Multinational Enterprise and Transnational Regions argues that processes of regional change should be understood from transnational interconnections rather than from local or national perspectives. Veel is er de laatste jaren te doen rond de heraanleg van de leien en de vernieuwing van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen. In dit kader wordt in een eerste artikel aandacht geschonken aan de opgravingen van belangrijke onderdelen van de zestiende-eeuwse citadel, die gedurende eeuwen het stadsbeeld van het zuiden van de stad domineerde. In een tweede bijdrage wordt een vergeten bron voor de geschiedenis van Antwerpen voor de schijnwerpers geworpen: een manuscript dat nooit eerder gepubliceerd iconografisch materiaal bevat. Een mooi overzicht van de spectaculaire ontwikkeling van de Antwerpse pers gedurende de negentiende eeuw wordt in een volgende bijdrage beschreven. In een vierde artikel wordt uitvoerig toegelicht dat Antwerpen naar het einde van de negentiende eeuw de belangrijkste haven was in Europa wat de invoer van graan en de handel ervan betreft. Een laatste bijdrage in het jaarboek beschrijft nauwkeurig hoe de Antwerp Waterworks Cy Ltd, een Engelse maatschappij die als eerste voor de waterbevoorrading van de stad Antwerpen en de haven zorgde, tijdens de moeilijke jaren van de Eerste Wereldoorlog haar taak opnam. Kronieken over de werking van het Genootschap voor Antwerpse Geschiedenis, van de Antwerpse erfgoedbibliotheken, het onroerend erfgoed van de stad Antwerpen en de talrijke Antwerpse musea ronden het jaarboek af.
