This is a practical guide to identifying, buying and selling older Hawaiian shirts, primarily those made from the 1930's to the Mid 1960's. It includes color photos of 385 shirt manufacturer's labels, arranged alphabetically and chronologically. This book "dates" labels and makes the information easy to find quickly. It acknowledges that some sellers can't -- or don't want to -- tell the difference between a shirt made in the 1940's and one made in the 2000's. After reading this book, you will be in a position to avoid falling victim to such sellers. The book also covers inconsistent sizing in Hawaiian shirts, the decision whether to wear or invest, using the Internet when shirt hunting, inspecting and measuring shirts, and more. Throughout, the emphasis is on practicality.

The first volume of Hawaii Chronicles presented little known, yet highly interesting historical facts about Hawaii that originally appeared in the pages of Honolulu magazine, the successor to Paradise of the Pacific and the oldest continuously published regional magazine in the United States. Articles in the first volume ranged from the Islands' volcanic beginnings to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the first days of World War II. In this new volume, Hawaii Chronicles II looks at the people that have made a difference in the Islands since World War II, including artists and writers, politicians, local heroes, and leaders in the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. Through interviews and biographical profiles, this new collection provides a historical context for the events that have shaped Hawaii's recent past.

Rarely a day goes by in Hawai‘i without the media reporting on environmental issues stemming from public debate. Will the proposed housing development block my access to the beach? Is the rising sea level going to cause flooding where I live? How does overfishing damage the reef? Is the water clean where I surf? Living on the Shores of Hawai‘i discusses the paradox of environmental loss under a management system considered by many to be one of the most stringent in the nation. It reviews a wide range of environmental concerns in Hawai‘i with an eye toward resolution by focusing on "place-based" management, a theme consistent with—and borrowing from—the Hawaiian ahupua‘a system. After describing a typical situation in Hawai‘i where a sandy beach is lost because a seawall has been built to protect a poorly sited home, the authors step back in time to trace land-use practices before and after the arrival of Westerners and the increased tempo of destruction following the latter. They go on to discuss volcanoes and the risk of placing homes in locations vulnerable to natural hazards and the potential dangers of earthquakes and tsunamis to a complacent public. Water issues, including scarcity, flooding, and pollution, are surveyed, as well as climate change and the possible outcomes of projected sea rise for Hawai‘i. The authors explain coastal erosion and beach loss and the problems of overfishing and ocean acidification. Later chapters assess residents’ risks to hurricanes, offering mitigation techniques, and provide a summary and some management conclusions. As tensions increase because of conflicting standards, misunderstandings, and contradictory ideals and actions, we put our economy and quality of life at risk. Sound decision-making begins with asking the right questions. This book addresses these questions within the context of sustainability and thus their influence on the future of Hawai‘i.

Hawaii's growth and its outlook for the future are viewed in light of recent demographic data and current events and trends in the completely revised and updated edition of The Peopling of Hawaii. With simplicity and candor, author Eleanor Nordyke describes how Hawaii was settled--first by Polynesians and later by successive waves of new arrivals from nations in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. Nordyke presents a concise analysis of current demographic data, accompanied by discussions of each major ethnic group. Well illustrated with photos and graphics, along with a complete appendix of statistical tables, the second edition of The Peopling of Hawaii presents the fascinating history of an island state's population, and underlines Hawaii's greatest challenge--how to share the finite resources of a fragile island environment. Foreword by Robert C. Schmitt

I’m Kat Smith, a Secret Service agent turned postmaster sleuth, assigned to cover a cozysmall town on Maui called Ohia. Things have been nuts since I got here; I’ve been dealing with murder, mayhem, and a cozy little mystery since I moved into a shack near the beach and was adopted by a stray cat named Tiki who has a nose for dead bodies. Now it’s “Hawaii time” to solve another murder mystery in paradise with new friends Opal, Artie, the Red Hat Society ladies, and a hot pilot named Mr. K. Assisting us are tech whiz Sophie Smithson and Detectives Lei and Pono of the Maui Police Department. If we’re lucky, no one will get hurt solving this latest small town cat-astrophe—but I’ve never been particularly lucky. "My new favorite cozy mystery series. A laugh on every page!" ~Reviewer
