Would you lock yourself in a haunted house to escape the clawing hands of the undead? 17 year-old Hazel Conners has to face both. Before the Lockdown, her life was simple: look out for her younger sister, make the wrestling team, hide her crush, keep her ability to see ghosts a secret, oh, and forget that her childhood was haunted by an evil shadow-figure. But now that the undead have forced her and her classmates into the very house where the shadow lurks, Hazel may be the only one who can save them all-if she can survive long enough to discover the shadow's more sinister purpose. The pressure is on, but Hazel can only juggle so many secrets in a haunted house surrounded by the dead.

Emmeline's gift of controlling shadows has isolated her from the rest of the world, but she's grown to be content, hidden away in her mansion with Dar, her own shadow, as her only company. Disaster strikes when a noble family visits their home and offers to take Emmeline away and cure her of magic. Desperate not to lose her shadows, she turns to Dar who proposes a deal: Dar will change the noble's mind, if Emmeline will help her become flesh as she once was. Emmeline agrees but the next morning the man in charge is in a coma and all that the witness saw was a long shadow with no one nearby to cast it. Scared to face punishment, Emmeline and Dar run away. With the noble's guards on her trail, Emmeline's only hope of clearing her name is to escape capture and perform the ritual that will set Dar free. But Emmeline's not sure she can trust Dar anymore, and it's hard to keep secrets from someone who can never leave your side.

Neo Romantic Landscapes written by Stella Hockenhull and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with Performing Arts categories.

Neo-Romantic Landscapes offers a reappraisal of the 1940s films of Powell and Pressburger focusing on their use of landscape. Questioning the established notion that the two film-makers, owing to their non-British personal roots, are located as un-British and ‘other’, Stella Hockenhull draws a correlation between the two media of film and painting to suggest otherwise. Emphasising the spiritual aspects of landscape and nature at a time when the experience and imagery of the war years generated a particular kind of ‘affect’ arising from the aftermath of destruction, she locates Powell and Pressburger’s wartime films in their historical and cultural context, notably Neo-Romanticism. By offering a close analysis of films such as A Canterbury Tale, I Know Where I’m Going!, Black Narcissus and Gone to Earth she finds similar aesthetic qualities in a number of British landscape paintings executed contemporaneously. Drawing on press reviews for contemporary spectator response, Neo-Romantic Landscapes offers a redirection of Film Studies, foregrounding the aesthetic pleasures of cinema in excess of narrative plausibility, thus resituating Powell and Pressburger in the British cultural traditions of the visual arts.

Dictionary Of Plant Lore written by D.C. Watts and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-02 with Science categories.

Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. For example, the common red poppy is known as "Blind Man" due to an old superstitious belief that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Many plant names derived from superstition, folk lore, or primal beliefs. Other names are purely descriptive and can serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. For example, Beauty-Berry is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa. Callicarpa is Greek for beautiful fruit. Still other names come from literary sources providing rich detail of the transmission of words through the ages. Conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore and ethnobotanical studies, this fully revised edition of Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origins contains over 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants. Wild and cultivated plants alike are identified by the botanical name. Further detail provides a brief account of the meaning of the name and detailed commentary on common usage. * Includes color images * Inclusive of all Latin terms with vernacular derivatives * The most comprehensive guide for plant scientists, linguists, botanists, and historians

Images Of Idiocy written by Martin Halliwell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book traces the concept of idiocy as it has developed in fiction and film in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It focuses particularly on visual images of idiocy and argues that writers as diverse as Gustave Flaubert, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Joseph Conrad, John Steinbeck, Flannery O'Connor and Rohinton Mistry, and filmmakers such as Jean Renoir, Akira Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, Werner Herzog and John Huston have all been attracted to idiot figures as a way of thinking through issues of language acquisition, intelligence, creativity, disability, religion and social identity. Martin Halliwell provides a lively and detailed discussion of the most significant literary and cinematic uses of idiocy, arguing that scientific conceptions of the term as a classifiable medical condition are much too narrow. With the explosion of interest in idiocy among American and European filmmakers in the 1990s and the growing interest in its often overlooked history, this book offers a timely reassessment of idiocy and its distinctive place at the intersection of science and culture.
