These sparkling essays on a variety of interesting subjects are written with insight and wit by an author widely recognized as one of the finest masters of English prose in the Catholic Church today. Fr. George Rutler touches upon philosophy, theology, history, biography, art, travel, politics, and more as he shows Christ making himself known to us in the events of daily life. A parish priest in New York City, Fr. Rutler has seen, and been edified by, the comings and goings of countless souls. He shows that they, and indeed all of us, are like the men on the road to Emmaus—common pedestrians walking, often unknowingly, with Christ, who explains the meaning of things and sets their hearts aflame.

God is ever present and is constantly speaking to us. We do not recognize his voice because we are often dealing with the voices in our head. We are so busy talking to Him in the form of prayer and asking for things, that we forget to listen for the answer. How often do we listen to see if God is answering our prayers or do we talk and talk not really expecting an answer? Many times we miss the answer because we are expecting God to answer in a certain way or mean. I believe that God speaks to us in many different ways and means. Yes, God speaks to us in many ways and we know that he speaks to us through his Word. For we know that God’s Word gives life! He spoke to Moses through a burning bush; he spoke to the prophets through visions and to others through angels. He even opened the mouth of a donkey to speak with the prophet Balaam. It could be an answer through a total stranger in the grocery store line or through a child. However he chooses to answer, we do have access to his Word whenever and where ever we want it. I believe that God is constantly speaking to us but our heads, minds and hearts are filled with so many distractions that it is almost impossible to hear or even acknowledge him in the busyness of life. God wants us to know that he hears and answers our prayers. He loves us and he is speaking the words we long to hear and need to hear. He is touching those who seek him with a quiet power of strength and love. He even knows the prayers of the heart; prayers that we pray without uttering a word. All we need to do is, wait and listen for the answer. God wants to show us a place of freedom, a place of his peace. He wants us to trust him with our lives and trust that he values us, cherish us and wants us to walk in truth. God wants us to feel his presence and experience his power. As we read his Word, we are in his presence and can feel his power. I am writing this as a reminder that he does care and he is with us always. Throughout the years I have written down the things God has spoken to me in our conversations. Do you think God wants us to simply be a “church goer”? Do you think he wants us to busy ourselves with church work? Or does he want to have a personal relationship with us, the kind of relationship that requires time and conversation. He does not require us to give a lot of time just quality time; time where he will have our undivided attention. I found that as I quietly sit and listen to him, God comforts, encourages, directs and guides me. This book is a compilation of scriptures and simply being at the feet of God allowing him to speak to the heart. It is a matter of losing self to the Spirit. It is my hope and prayer that this little book might inspire, encourage and lift up someone who might feel as though God has forgotten. It is my desire to make God’s Word more effective in your everyday lives. I pray that others will read this book and feel God’s presence and know that he is there for them as he has been for me. To get the most from this book, read it slowly and intently. Search for those special words that speak to your heart and spirit as well as your needs. These words will help you grow in your spiritual walk as you feel the presence of God our Father. I pray that God will bless every life it touches and the words will leave these pages and find a home in your heart.

Studies consistently show that 90 percent of all people believe in a god of some sort or another. Spirituality, therefore, is not a demographic outlier but rather the statistically significant air we breathe. It is not a hobby for the scientifically illiterate but one of the basic elements in the periodic table of human experience. The real question before us then is not whether god exists, but rather, Who is this god in whom most people believe? We, therefore, need to begin our apologetic project by helping the majority identify their god rather than arguing with the minority about whether or not such a being exists. Most people prefer to live with a hazy notion of spirituality because they dont want a world where God is in control, yet they also dont want to be forced to robotically dance to the tune of their selfish genes. A vague understanding of spirituality gives them a culturally acceptable opt-out clause from a dreary world ruled by chemicals while simultaneously allowing them to define the terms of divine engagement. We are united by the fact that we all have a spiritual hole in our lives, but it is the odd ways in which we fill it that divides us. All paths do not lead to the same God, but they do begin with the same spiritual void. It is here that our journey must begin. In God Spoke, Dr. Strandness makes the case that our spiritual nature is the result of our hardwired human longing to rethink the thoughts of a God who has already spoken his mind. The divine discourse that fills the universe inspires us to bend our ears to hear his creational words, open our eyes to his written Word, and have our hearts transformed by his incarnate Word.

In 1789, as the French Revolution shook Europe to the core, the new United States was struggling for survival in the face of financial insolvency and bitter political and regional divisions. When the United States Spoke French explores the republic’s formative years from the viewpoint of a distinguished circle of five Frenchmen taking refuge in America. When the French Revolution broke out, these men had been among its leaders. They were liberal aristocrats and ardent Anglophiles, convinced of the superiority of the British system of monarchy and constitution. They also idealized the new American republic, which seemed to them an embodiment of the Enlightenment ideals they celebrated. But soon the Revolutionary movement got ahead of them, and they found themselves chased across the Atlantic. François Furstenberg follows these five men—Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Napoleon’s future foreign minister; theoristreformer Rochefoucauld, the duc de Liancourt; Louis-Marie Vicomte de Noailles; Moreau de Saint-Méry; and Constantin-François Chasseboeuf, Comte Volney—as they left their homes and families in France, crossed the Atlantic, and landed in Philadelphia—then America’s capital, its principal port, and by far its most cosmopolitan city and the home of the wealthiest merchants and financiers. The book vividly reconstructs their American adventures, following along as they integrated themselves into the city and its elite social networks, began speculating on backcountry lands, and eventually became enmeshed in Franco-American diplomacy. Through their stories, we see some of the most famous events of early American history in a new light, from the diplomatic struggles of the 1790s to the Haitian Revolution to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. By the end of this period, the United States was on its way to becoming a major global power. Through this small circle of men, we find new ways to understand the connections between U.S. and world history, and gain fresh insight into American history’s most critical era. Beautifully written and brilliantly argued, When the United States Spoke French offers a fresh perspective on the tumultuous years of the young nation, when the first great republican experiments were put to the test. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s smash Broadway musical Hamilton has sparked new interest in the Revolutionary War and the Founding Fathers. In addition to Alexander Hamilton, the production also features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Aaron Burr, Lafayette, and many more.

As long as the world lasts, the parables will call people to faith in Christ. Their very simplicity shines brightly with the gracious invitation to repent, to believe, and to be reconciled to God, through the same Jesus who first uttered them so long ago. In this contemporary study, Gordon Keddie seeks to retain the essential simplicity of the parables by the lightest touch of exposition, allowing them to live and move and touch our being with a vibrant immediacy and unmistakable clarity.
