After the War of 1812 and the removal of the region’s Indigenous peoples, the American Midwest became a paradoxical land for settlers. Even as many settlers found that the region provided the bountiful life of their dreams, others found disappointment, even failure—and still others suffered social and racial prejudice. In this broad and authoritative survey of midwestern agriculture from the War of 1812 to the turn of the twentieth century, R. Douglas Hurt contends that this region proved to be the country’s garden spot and the nation’s heart of agricultural production. During these eighty-five years the region transformed from a sparsely settled area to the home of large industrial and commercial cities, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Detroit. Still, it remained primarily an agricultural region that promised a better life for many of the people who acquired land, raised crops and livestock, provided for their families, adopted new technologies, and sought political reform to benefit their economic interests. Focusing on the history of midwestern agriculture during wartime, utopian isolation, and colonization as well as political unrest, Hurt contextualizes myriad facets of the region’s past to show how agricultural life developed for midwestern farmers—and to reflect on what that meant for the region and nation.

The old woman badgers the boy into taking her sailing, but when the weather turns bad, it becomes a wild sail. It becomes the last trip before she goes into the hospital where she dies: but not before the two of them share memories of their last sail together. Hazel helps build the boy's confidence during a tough time in his home life. Both moving and joyful, Into the Wind is a poignant story about loss and love in a boy's life, and the surprising and sustaining bonds that can grow between the old and young.

The wind was the cause of it all. The sand, too, had a share in it, and human beings were involved, but the wind was the primal force, and but for it the whole series of events would not have happened. there was nothing to break the sweep of the wind across the treeless prairies, when the sand blew in blinding fury across the plains. The winds were cruel to women that came under their tyranny. They were at them ceaselessly, buffeting them with icy blasts in winter, burning them with hot breath in summer, parching their skins and roughening their hair, and trying to wear down their nerves by attrition, and drive them away. The Wind by Dorothy Scarborough is a tensely written story about Letty Mason’s descent into madness. The novel opens with Letty, an 18-year-old orphan from Virginia, on a westbound train headed to Sweetwater Texas. Letty, coming from the lush and verdant Virginia, is not prepared for the drought-burdened Texas desert where there is no escape from the incessant wind. Nor can she cope with the financial desperation of everyday life in Sweetwater. Masterfully written, liberally sprinkled with genuine Texas vernacular.

Within these pages lives a story of love, of friendships, and of families, which are imbedded within a place and time, where the most diametrically opposite of human values existed and survived side-by-side, where heaven and hell daily rubbed their social elbows, and each of their elements were ever threatening the survival of their counterpart. Here is a story of people caught between the gears and wheels of their god's invisible machinery that daily drives their universe. Here is portrayed both the physical and psychological landscape of a time whose structures, writings, and beliefs have now been systematically destroyed by a new foreign master and a new foreign religion, which has a so-called "Modern Strategy" about blood sacrifice and intellectual domination. Here is the story of lovers, whose powerful desire to be forever together, is the magic that guides them through an ever-fluxing nightmare that is their reality. The story opens in the capitol city of the Aztec Empire during the night of November the 8th in the year 1516 CE.

By the time of the Vietnam War, the U.S. military had transitioned to jet aircraft. Yet leaders soon learned prop-driven planes could still play a role in counterinsurgency warfare. World War II-era Douglas B-26 light bombers proved effective in close air support and interdiction, beginning with Operation Farm Gate in 1961. Forty B-26s were remanufactured as improved A-26 attack aircraft, which destroyed hundreds of North Vietnamese supply vehicles on the Ho Chi Minh Trail in 1966-1969. The personal recollections of 37 pilots, navigators, maintenance and armament personnel, and family members, tell the harrowing story of B-26 and A-26 Air Commando Wing combat operations in Vietnam and Laos.
