There are just so many things that I love about this book that I simply don't know where to begin! Marich and Dansiger take an approach that is comprehensive, integrative, relational, and deeply hopeful. Gomez, MC, LPC Author of EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment and Dissociation Healing Addiction with EMDR is tailored to support therapists along the different phases of EMDR Therapy. It focuses on understanding each individual case, through case conceptualization and treatment planning, and avoiding the simplistic ";What protocol should we use?" question. People need to be understood as individual beings since this is the essence of EMDR Therapy... - Dolores Mosquera, Co-Author of EMDR and Dissociation: The Progressive Approach INTRA-TP, A Coruña, Spain Offers a holistic, comprehensive approach to addiction treatment that combines standard EMDR therapy with specialty protocols This innovative and brand new EMDR therapy guide for healing addiction is the first book to underscore the efficacy of EMDR therapy as a primary modality for treating trauma and addiction. Targeting the trauma lurking beneath the addiction, the resource presents a comprehensive collection of best practices and strategies for using EMDR therapy to treat addictive disorders, and guides practitioners in incorporating their protocols of choice into EMDR treatment. While illuminating underlying theory, the book focuses on practice knowledge and how therapists can translate this knowledge into clinical settings in order to provide clinicians with a fully-integrated approach to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of addiction across populations Written in user-friendly language by two prominent practitioners and trainers of EMDR therapy, the book helps therapists to address the complexity of addictive disorders by providing a comprehensive guide to the standard eight-phase protocol and adaptive information processing model as groundwork for case conceptualization and treatment. Chapters contain case studies with commentary on relevant decision-making points along with discussion questions to enhance critical thinking. Abundant “Tips and Tricks” learned in the trenches make the text come alive with clinical relevance, and references to many of the best specialty protocols and strategies for treating clients suffering from addiction due to trauma, guide readers to choose the best protocol for each situation. Purchase includes digital access for use on most mobile devices or computers. Key Features: Authors’ lived experience brings a wealth or real-world application Introduces the standard EMDR therapy protocol as a modality of choice for treating trauma and addiction disorders Rates popular specialty protocols for addiction and provides guidance on how to integrate them into treatment Delivers a wealth of best practices and strategies for working with clients with addiction issues Addresses effectively working with dissociation in EMDR therapy Focuses on best practice informed by a thorough review of up-to-date scholarly literature Uses abundant case studies, “Tips and Tricks from the Field” and practical exercises to reinforce knowledge

"Unhealed trauma causes distress in the body. When the nature of the distress overrides a person's existing system for coping, or the trauma is not processed, survivors may numb themselves or seek a more pleasurable experience to escape. Such behavior is a completely natural response to unprocessed trauma. This tendency we have as human beings to dissociate, or sever, from the present moment when the moment becomes unpleasant or painful is amplified for survivors when chemicals or other reinforcing behaviors are introduced. Such chemicals and behaviors can accelerate the potency of dissociation. The field of addiction studies has slowly attuned to this connection between unhealed trauma and addiction, yet more work needs to be done. In both our travels throughout the country teaching on trauma and in our local communities, we continue to hear addiction treatment program directors make comments like, "You have to shut down trauma if they bring it up." Sometimes the resistance takes on the tone of, "There's no time in treatment to get into trauma. It's like opening up a Pandora's Box. They just have to learn to stay sober.""--

In April of 2016, a ground-breaking distance-learning course on EMDR and Spiritual Trauma made its debut, and the response was overwhelming. EMDR therapists from countries around the world registered for the webinar, and the positive reviews began to pour in. Now in book form, this unique publication offers EMDR therapists yet another way to receive this sought-after training. Here's what people are saying about Mark's teachings on Spiritual Trauma: ..".Mark's style, knowledge and wisdom made this seminar a 'Pearl of EMDR training.' I am looking forward to more of his teachings." - Elena Coello-Jemmali, Psy.D. (Miami, FL) "This information on spiritual trauma should be required learning for all therapists in their diversity trainings. I love how Mark blended in EMDR Therapy and the AIP Model. It felt very organic. Thank you, Mark." - Susan Arland, MA, LMHC, EMDRIA, Approved Consultant (Des Moines, Iowa) ..".I loved the way that Mark presented in such a real and practical manner with examples that really helped bring the concepts home. I definitely have learnt much that I can use in my counseling practice. Thanks again." - Preethi Jacob (India) "Thank you, Mark, for the time and effort you put into developing this training... (it) gives words and understanding to the dynamics of spiritual trauma and helps to shed light on the possibility of freedom and overcoming. Your training has been a blessing to me and gives me tools to add to my practice, including assessments and resources as well as things to think about and ways to develop curiosity with clients in their therapy process. I believe this will help to continue to shape our ability to be genuine and compassionate with others both in and out of our offices." - Shelly Teske-Hulan, Registered Psychologist (Alberta, Canada) "Thank you so much for sharing your experience and expertise... I have some more tools in my toolkit and have learned how to use the ones I already had in new ways." - Maureen Martens, MA, CPC, ICADC, CSAT "I found this seminar to be very helpful. In a time where spirituality is seen as a taboo subject, Mark presented and shared how beneficial and healing one's faith can be." - Jennifer Knapp, LPCC (Perrysburg, OH) ..".I find Mark's course so helpful because it provides a framework and interventions that help a therapist set clear boundaries around their own biases while supporting clients in examining their existential questions... I think any therapist can benefit from this webinar and highly recommend it." - Terry L. Chapman, MSW, LICSW (Fairmont, WV) "This course provided practical ways to address spiritual trauma, which is often overlooked, in an engaging and meaningful way." - Deborah Moyer, MA, LMFT (San Diego, CA) "Mark presented this course with a strong knowledge base on both EMDR therapy and spirituality. His examples for Cognitive Interweaves were excellent and very useful. He integrated new concepts with already established beliefs about religion and spirituality that caused me to rethink these concepts. Truly a valuable and enjoyable experience!" - Wanda K. Holloway, PsyD, LPC, LCSW (Springfield, MO) "Mr. Odland's presentation gave testimony to the importance of including the client's own spiritual background as an important tool in the overall healing process... I believe this can be a very valuable addition to my therapeutic arsenal." - Sandra Lowen, PhD, LCSW - (Graham, WA) "An important and well organized introduction to a deep and possibly under assessed area of trauma." - Wendy Krauss MS, LMHC, CAS (Leesburg, FL) "What a fair and sensitive presentation of this important subject!" - Michael Govan, MA LLP, LPC (Troy, MI) The content of this book is intended for fully-trained EMDR therapists, and is approved by EMDRIA for 6.0 CE credits and is also available as an e-book, audio, or webinar training (purchasing a post-test is required to gain access to credits).
