Miraculous healing is a topic that always stirs keen interest. Some people claim to have experienced it and others would like to. Some believe that it results from divine intervention; others contend it always has a psychological explanation or is merely fraudulent. Any serious investigation must take into account the diverse accounts of healing found in diverse branches of the Christian tradition from its New Testament origins to the present. However one feels about healing, it has been a mysterious but often central phenomenon in Christian experience. As a believing scholar, Ronald A. N. Kydd steers a middle course between the uncritical enthusiasm and the rationalistic skepticism that often skew popular discussions of the topic. The six "models for understanding" that arise from his study bring clarifying order to the diversities of method, theology, and social location that have characterized healing ministries in different times and places. After an introductory survey of healing in the New Testament, Kydd traces these models through history: 1. Confrontational" as seen in the work of J. C. Blumhardt and John Wimber 2. Intercessory" as reflected in the ministry of Brother Andre and in the appearances of Mary at Medjugorje 3. Reliquarial" the place of relics in the history of healing 4. Incubational" as seen at Mdnnedorf 5. Revelational" mirrored in the ministries of William Branham and Kathryn Kuhlman 6. Soteriological" the model best exemplified by Oral Roberts

This monograph presents the most comprehensive investigation yet made into the healing activity of the Early Church. In contrast to early skeptics such as B. B. Warfield, the author is convinced that there was a vigorous healing ministry in the centuries that followed the apostles, though it fluctuated somewhat and changed its mode. Exorcism is prominently attested throughout the period. The pre-Nicene Fathers recognized its great apologetic value as a dramatic demonstration of the superiority of Jesus Christ over pagan gods. Interest in healing miracles per se appears to have been particularly characteristic of the less educated members of the Church and those who were chaste in their devotion to the cause of Christ. Among these groups, gifts of healing were found, becoming rare it seems by the mid-third century but well attested again later in monastic circles.

"A Case for Healing Today is a wealth of information. It is well written. It confirms the fact that the gift of healing never died in the church. This is the kind of book I like to read. It is a serious study of the subject from the Bible, church history, and theology. In each area of study, Bob interacts with biblical scholars, historians, and theologians... A Case for Healing Today is an enlightening read. It is honest scholarship... I encourage anyone who wants to have a better grounding in the biblical, historical, and theological basis for believing in the continuation of the gifts, especially the gift of healing, to make this book part of his or her library. This book is not milk, it's meat. It is a great introduction for pastors who have questions about the subject of the continuation of the gifts--especially healing and ministry of deliverance." Randy Clark, ThD, DMin, Founder and President of Global Awakening and the Apostolic Network of Global Awakening "A Case for Healing Today presents the best and most creative recent scholarship in both theory and practice of this neglected commission of Jesus. This work offers no standard rehash of what you've read before, but serves up many fresh insights into how the healing power of God expresses the truly authentic mission and teaching of Christ himself. A Case for Healing Today lays out the very essence of original Christianity; it is a bold challenge to the highly evolved, derivative, and impractical traditional theologies that distract from the clear focus of the core of the gospel (Rom 1:16)." Jon Mark Ruthven, PhD, Professor Emeritus Theology, Regent University; Doctor of Ministry Mentor, United Theological Seminary Jesus's command to the disciples to heal the sick and cast out demons was an integral part of the proclamation of the gospel of the Kingdom of God. Christianity spread quickly through the early centuries of the church because of this demonstrated message. Did we lose God's gift of healing and deliverance in the church as the centuries rolled on? Can we mesh Christian healing with scientific progress? A Case for Healing Today presents biblical, historical, and theological perspectives on Christian healing. Through an understanding of author Bob Sawvelle's meticulous research, Christians can proclaim and demonstrate the good new of God's healing presence today. For nearly two thousand years, faith and prayer were integral to the healing process, but modern beliefs sometimes allow science to trump faith. While science has made tremendous strides in curing disease and repairing injury, Christians should embrace God's healing power as well. How has healing helped spread the good news of God throughout Christian history? Are divine healing and deliverance valid for today? In his new book, A Case for Healing Today, Bob Sawvelle applies the highest scholarly standards to the biblical, historical, and theological considerations of faith-based healing and deliverance from evil spirits. Through interviews with theologians and historians, he presents a complete picture of Christian healing, beginning with its roots in Jesus's miracles and his instructions to his disciples. He examines healing's historical fluidity, evidenced in Dark Age suspicions that gave way to Reformation enlightenment and hence shifted the teachings of church leadership. Lastly, he gives insight into the views of modern theologians as they grapple with the apparent incompatibility of faith and modern science. The result is a balanced analysis of the relevance of modern Christian healing that neither denies the benefits of science nor denigrates the Word of God.

The cults of the saints were central to the medieval Church. These holy men and women acted as patrons and protectors to the religious communities who housed their relics and to the devotees who requested their assistance in petitioning God for a miracle. Among the collections of posthumous miracle stories, miracula, accounts of holy healing feature prominently and depict cure-seekers successfully securing their desired remedy for a range of ailments and afflictions. What can these miracle accounts tell us of the cure-seekers' experiences of their journey from ill health to recovery, and how was healthcare presented in these sources? This book undertakes an in-depth study of the miraculous cure-seeking process through the lens of Latin miracle accounts produced in twelfth-century England, a time both when saints' cults particularly flourished and there was an increasing transmission and dissemination of classical and Arabic medical works. Focused on shorter miracula with a predominantly localised focus, and thus on a select group of cure-seekers, it brings together studies of healthcare and pilgrimage to look at an alternative to medical intervention and the practicalities and processes of securing saintly assistance.

Joseph W. Williams offers a compelling examination of the changing healing practices of pentecostals in the United States over the past hundred years, from the early believers, who rejected mainstream medicine and overtly spiritualized disease, to the later generations of pentecostals and their charismatic successors, who dramatically altered the healing paradigms they inherited. Williams shows that over the course of the twentieth century, pentecostal denunciations of the medical profession often gave way to "natural" healing methods associated with scientific medicine, natural substances, and even psychology. By the early twenty first century, figures such as the pentecostal preacher T. D. Jakes appeared on The Dr. Phil Show, other healers marketed their books at mainstream retailers such as Wal-Mart, and some developed lucrative nutritional products that sold online and in health food stores across the nation. Exploring the interconnections, resonances, and continued points of tension between pentecostal adherents and some of their fiercest rivals, Spirit Cure chronicles pentecostals' embrace of competitors' healing practices and illuminates their dramatic transition from a despised minority to major players in the world of American evangelicalism and mainstream American culture.

The Lord For The Body written by James William Opp and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Canada categories.

In the early 1920s, English-Canadians were captivated by the urban campaigns of faith healing evangelists. Crowds squeezed into local arenas to witness the afflicted, "slain in the spirit," casting away braces and crutches. Professional faith healers, although denounced by critics as promoting mass hypnotism, gained notoriety and followers in their call for people to choose "the Lord for the Body." In his innovative work, James Opp explores the cultural practice of Protestant faith healing in Canada from its Victorian roots as an informal network of women sharing testimonies to its culmination in the organized professional campaigns of the twentieth century. Framing the phenomenon of divine healing as a history of the body, Opp provides a unique window onto the intersection of religion and medicine. From newspaper accounts to criminal proceedings,The Lord for the Bodytraces the reactions of ministers, doctors, and state authorities who denounced faith healing as dangerous to spiritual and physical health. Undaunted by such attacks, the faithful continued to seek healing through prayer, a practice that operated as a powerful devotional observance and a point of resistance to modern medicine.

It was on August 30, 1975,when Delores Winder attended a Methodist Conference on the Holy Spirit in Dallas, Texas, where Kathryn Kuhlman was speaking, that the above Scripture became a reality in her life. Facing death, terminally ill with pseudo-arthrosis and having been in a body cast for over fourteen years, Delores was only seeking to receive something from God that she could leave with her young son Chris when she died. She received the answer that night in Dallas, as she felt the very presence of the living God surrounding her. Never having seen a miraculous healing take place and believing that supernatural healing ended with the apostles, Delores was not praying for a physical miracle. However,we have a God that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, and she was transformed from hopelessness to wholeness, set free from the disease that had her bound. God is no respecter of persons, and what He did for Delores, He will do for you. Always remember, joy comes in the morning, for regardless of any need you may be facing, God is with you, and there is nothing impossible with Him!
