Violent debate of socialized medicine and health insurance in the United States is punctuated regularly by emotional appeals to the experience of other countries. "Look at England," cries one of the disputants. “Ah! But look at Denmark and France,” retorts his opponent. Actually, few Americans have more than the most casual knowledge of the health insurance schemes which have been adopted abroad. Never before has it been possible to obtain in English a complete and objective statement of the work of the Health Insurance Doctor in these three democracies. What is the average income of a doctor under one of these plans? What are the precise rates for services? What office hours? Does a political bureaucracy control medical practice? How many patients may a practitioner carry? What are the rules about free prescription of drugs? How much “paper work” and reporting is required of the doctor? What is the relation between health insurance and relief? And-most important-what do the doctors themselves think of the idea? All of these and hundreds of other vital questions are answered fully, dispassionately, and with amazing clarity in The Health Insurance Doctor. The author is professor of law at the University of California and master of a straightforward style which presents vividly the issues of health insurance confronting a modern democracy. No legislator, welfare worker, medical practitioner, hospital executive, relief administrator, or interested layman can afford to miss this remarkable book. Originally published in 1939. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Doctors Patients And Health Insurance written by Herman Miles Somers and has been published by Brookings Institution Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1961 with Business & Economics categories.

This book is concerned with the organization, distribution, and financing of personal health services and goods-that is the instrumentalities through which doctors, hospitals, and others serve individual patients. This subject is technically known as "medical care" as distinguished from "medicine," or "medical services," or "medical practice," all of which relate primarily to the professional content. In common parlance, "medical care" is often used more broadly and at times, we find it necessary to do so. Indeed, the line of division is far from precise. For example, a balanced evaluation of different types of health insurance cannot overlook effects upon the quality of medical service, just as a doctor frequently cannot make a definitive diagnosis without knowledge of the patient's environment.

Private Practice Public Payment written by David Naylor and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986-09-01 with History categories.

Naylor's particular concern is with the nature and extent of the medical profession's opposition at both the provincial and federal levels. He details various developments in medical politics and policies, including the dispute over state health insurance plans in British Columbia during the depression, the national health insurance program drafted by the King government, the doctors' strike in Saskatchewan, and the development and eventual governmental rejections of prepayment plans sponsored by organized medicine. The author concludes that physicians regarded medical insurance schemes over which they had little administrative control, or where coverage was not limited to the indigent or to those earning below a modest wage, as threats to professional incomes and autonomy. His analysis of the evolution of the professional perspectives, policies, and pressure group activities suggests that physicians are as likely to act in their own economic and social interest as any other group, and that they oppose legislation that would threaten these interests while supporting laws that strengthen them. Since the Medical Care Act became law, Ottawa has moved to strengthen health care plans in the provinces, and once again the medical profession has resisted. The final chapter in Naylor's book puts these current conflicts in historical perspective by linking them to their political precedents.

Roughly 40 million Americans have no health insurance, private or public, and the number has grown steadily over the past 25 years. Who are these children, women, and men, and why do they lack coverage for essential health care services? How does the system of insurance coverage in the U.S. operate, and where does it fail? The first of six Institute of Medicine reports that will examine in detail the consequences of having a large uninsured population, Coverage Matters: Insurance and Health Care, explores the myths and realities of who is uninsured, identifies social, economic, and policy factors that contribute to the situation, and describes the likelihood faced by members of various population groups of being uninsured. It serves as a guide to a broad range of issues related to the lack of insurance coverage in America and provides background data of use to policy makers and health services researchers.
