This book presents the proceedings of HealthGrid 2010, the latest in the annual open forum for the integration of grid technologies, e science and e health methods and their application in biomedicine and healthcare. Previous conferences have highlighted the need to involve all actors, such as physicians, scientists and technologists, and have served to demonstrate the usefulness of grids to potential application domains, at least at the prototype level. More recently, cloud computing seems set to make an impact as a paradigm more readily acceptable in the practice of healthcare informatics, whilst grids may remain the infrastructure of choice for researchers. Included in this volume are the 19 papers selected after review from 42 original submissions for full presentation at the 2010 conference. Additional papers, presented as posters at the conference, are reproduced here in shorter form. The book has four sections: section one contains four papers under the broad heading of `Socio Economic Aspects and Accessibility', section two: `Future of Grids, Core Technologies & Data Integration', consists of nine papers and section three comprises a further six papers covering `Applications'. Section four includes the `Poster Extended Abstracts'. The integration of grid, cloud and other e-infrastructures into the fields of biology, bioinformatics, biomedicine, and healthcare are crucial if optimum use is to be made of the latest high-performance and distributed computer technology in these areas. Science gateways are concerned with offering intuitive graphical user interfaces to applications, data, and tools on distributed computing infrastructures. This book presents the joint proceedings of the Tenth HealthGrid Conference and the Fourth International Workshop on Science Gateways for Life Sciences (IWSG-Life), held in Amsterdam, Netherlands in May 2012. The HealthGrid conference promotes the exchange and debate of ideas, technologies and solutions likely to promote the integration of grids into biomedical research and health in the broadest sense. Telehealth -- the delivery of health services and clinical information from a distance -- has reached new levels with the communication revolution of the last decade: consumer videoconferencing, mobile devices, high bandwidth infrastructure and close range wireless sensor networks have made many advances possible in the field. Improving patient safety and the quality of healthcare poses many challenges, and information technology (IT) can support the measures necessary to address these. Unfortunately, the risk of adverse drug events (ADEs) rises alongside the increasing sophistication of the health IT systems incorporated into hospital environments. These pose a risk to the safety of patients and incur considerable extra healthcare costs. Approaches introduced to eliminate ADEs raise a number of concerns, not least that the successful transferability and use of such tools into real clinical settings is only possible by means of a holistic, validated and qualitative approach. This book is a collection of papers presented at the second workshop organized in the context of the EU-funded Patient Safety through Intelligent Procedures in medication (PSIP) project and held in May 2011 in Paris. The workshop provides an opportunity for experts active in the field to share ideas and experiences arising from many different perspectives. The 29 papers address current, novel methods and applications which have achieved concrete results and are relevant to the domain of patient safety as a whole, and are grouped into four main sections: designing IT systems for patient safety; methods and technologies for developing patient safety systems; novel applications to validate patient safety informatics and impact assessment studies for patient safety informatics outcomes. Significant progress has been made in the field, but even greater challenges must still be faced if a successful transfer of research ideas and outcomes into clinical practice is to be accomplished.
