Published in 1899, Joseph Conrad’s novella is a stark portrayal of the monstrous nature of colonialism. It is the thrilling journey of the narrator, Marlow, up the Congo River in search of an infamous ivory trader named Kurtz. Finding the man, however, fosters a fascination in Marlow that borders on obsession. After seeing Kurtz’s god-like influence over the inhabitants of the region, Marlow is both disgusted and drawn to his horrible power. As he learns how Kurtz has gained and maintains his power over the local people, he not only questions his own values, but those of Western civilization as a whole. This glowing example of character study and psychological depth is a can’t-miss for bibliophiles. For more classic titles like this, visit www.diversionbooks.com/ebooks/diversion-classics

Heart of Darkness is a classic of world literature. The book tells a story about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa. Marlow, the story's narrator, tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism. Joseph Conrad acknowledged that Heart of Darkness was in part based on his own experiences during his travels in Africa. In 1890, at the age of 32, he was appointed by a Belgian trading company to serve as the captain of a steamer on the Congo River. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties. He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an indifferent universe. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature. Heart of Darkness is often considered the world’s best short novel. The book serves as a bridge between the 19th century and modernism, an adventure tale revolving around the ambiguity of themes such as truth, morality, and evil. Joseph Conrad witnessed the European exploitation of the Congo with his own eyes. He once sailed up the Congo River himself to locate a countryman at a trading station deep within the country – even though this man wasn't named Kurtz. The goal and enigma of the journey have become synonymous with this name, one of the most unforgettable fictional characters of our time. JOSEPH CONRAD [1857–1924] was born in Ukraine to Polish parents, went to sea at the age of seventeen, and ended his career as a captain in the English merchant navy. His most famous work is the novella Heart of Darkness [1899], adapted into a film by Francis Ford Coppola in 1979 as Apocalypse Now.

Of the many millions of books written over the course of history, only a relatively small percentage have been deemed classics. Authors of classic literature are those who have penned works definitive of a style, movement, era, or ethos. Their works are timeless in message and scope. This essential volume chronicles the lives of many literary luminaries—including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, and Virginia Woolf—examining their early histories, journeys to success, and greatest tomes.
