It is late summer 1780 and Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights after overhearing Catherine say how it would degrade her to marry him. The few possessions he takes with him include an amulet; his only possession other than the rags he wore when found as an urchin in Liverpool. When he wears it, the amulet seems to bring him luck. Heathcliff travels to Liverpool, where he makes his way to India as a deck hand on a ship of the East India Company. On arrival in Madras, Heathcliff finds work, love and wealth, but will his luck last and will he ever be able to put his past behind him? Imagining the short period of Heathcliff’s absence in Emily Brontë’s acclaimed novel, Heathcliff’s Fortune depicts the events which sees him transformed from a rough farm boy to a wealthy gentleman, and relates how he acquired, in India, the great wealth that made enacting his terrible revenge on those who wronged him possible.

Animal Visions written by Susan Mary Pyke and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-03-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Animal Visions considers how literature responds to the harms of anthropocentricism, working with Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights (1847) and various adaptations of this canonistic novel to show how posthumanist dream writing unsettles the privileging of the human species over other species. Two feminist and post-Freudian responses, Kathy Acker’s poem “Obsession” (1992) and Anne Carson’s “The Glass Essay” (1997) most strongly extend Brontë’s dream writing in this direction. Building on the trope of a ludic Cathy ghost who refuses the containment of logic and reason, these and other adaptations offer the gift of a radical peri-hysteria. This emotional excess is most clearly seen in Kate Bush’s music video “Wuthering Heights” (1978) and Peter Kosminsky’s film Wuthering Heights (1992). Such disturbances make space for a moor love that is particularly evident in Jane Urquhart’s novel Changing Heaven (1989) and, to a lesser extent Sylvia Plath’s poem, “Wuthering Heights” (1961). Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and its most productive afterings make space for co-affective relations between humans and other animal beings. Andrea Arnold’s film Wuthering Heights (2011) and Luis Buñuel’s Abismos de Pasión (1954) also highlight the rupturing split gaze of non-acting animals in their films. In all of these works depictions of intra-active and entangled responses between animals show the potential for dynamic and generative multispecies relations, where the human is one animal amongst the kin of the world.

William Wyler written by Gabriel Miller and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-05 with History categories.

During his forty-five-year career, William Wyler (1902--1981) pushed the boundaries of filmmaking with his gripping storylines and innovative depth-of-field cinematography. With a body of work that includes such memorable classics as Jezebel (1938), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Ben-Hur (1959), and Funny Girl (1968), Wyler is the most nominated director in the history of the Academy Awards and bears the distinction of having won an Oscar for Best Director on three occasions. Both Bette Davis and Lillian Hellman considered him America's finest director, and Sir Laurence Olivier said he learned more about film acting from Wyler than from anyone else. In William Wyler, Gabriel Miller explores the career of one of Hollywood's most unique and influential directors, examining the evolution of his cinematic style. Wyler's films feature nuanced shots and multifaceted narratives that reflect his preoccupation with realism and story construction. The director's later works were deeply influenced by his time in the army air force during World War II, and the disconnect between the idealized version of the postwar experience and reality became a central theme of Wyler's masterpiece, The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). None of Wyler's contemporaries approached his scope: he made successful and seminal films in practically every genre, including social drama, melodrama, and comedy. Yet, despite overwhelming critical acclaim and popularity, Wyler's work has never been extensively studied. This long-overdue book offers a comprehensive assessment of the director, his work, and his films' influence.
