Walking is one of the simplest things we do as humans. It’s how most of us experience life. In The Way Under Our Feet, Graham Usher conveys how exhilarating it is to walk into the depths of our humanity. We become more ready to recognize the needs as well as the joys of others; we sift our thoughts; we seek to heal our battered world, even as we glory in the beauty of nature; we find ourselves companying with our three mile an hour God. ‘This is a lovely book, full of light, grace and meaning. Usher celebrates his passion for walking by exploring religious texts and stories, but this by no means confines his thoughts. We are drawn by secular texts, too: Macfarlane sits alongside Kierkegaard; Thoreau and Walden alongside T. S. Eliot. Through them all, we learn why walking is so unspeakably good for heart, soul and body.’ DAME FIONA REYNOLDS, MASTER OF EMMANUEL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, AUTHOR OF THE FIGHT FOR BEAUTY ‘Wonderful. Offers highly original and striking observations combined with apposite, moving and often humorous personal anecdotes. A classic, catching a genuine and humble holiness.’ BISHOP DAVID WILBOURNE

Walden By Haiku written by Ian Marshall and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this intriguing literary experiment, Ian Marshall presents a collection of nearly three hundred haiku that he extracted from Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and documents the underlying similarities between Thoreau's prose and the art of haiku. Although Thoreau would never have encountered the Japanese haiku tradition, the way in which the most important ideas in Walden find expression in the most haikulike language suggests that Thoreau at Walden Pond and the haiku master Basho at his "old pond" might have drunk at the same well. Walden and the tradition of haiku share an aesthetic that embodies ideas in natural images, dissolves boundaries between self and world, emphasizes simplicity, and honors both solitude and humble, familiar objects. Marshall examines each of these aesthetic principles and offers a relevant collection of "found" haiku. In the second part of the book, he explains his process of finding the haiku in the text, breaking down each chapter of Walden to highlight the imagery and poetic language embedded in the most powerful passages. Marshall's exploration not only provides a fresh perspective on haiku, but also sheds new light on Thoreau's much-studied text and lays the foundation for a clearer understanding of the aesthetics of American nature writing.

Heaven Is Under The Feet Of Governments written by Abdellatif Raji and has been published by Yaraak, LLC. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-02 with Business & Economics categories.

"Heaven Is Under the Feet of Governments" employs a striking metaphor to describe the profound responsibility and potential of governments to shape society's welfare. This phrase poetically encapsulates the idea that just as the ground supports us physically, good governance is the foundation that upholds a society's moral and ethical structure. The book explores the integration of Maqasid, a framework derived from Islamic jurisprudence, into modern governance, arguing that this approach can lead to more ethical, just, and humane societal management. The Essence (80/20) Maqasid Framework: The core of the book revolves around the Maqasid framework, which prioritizes the protection and fulfillment of essential human interests such as life, religion, intellect, progeny, and property. Raji suggests that governments can achieve better governance by aligning policies with these universal principles, which are inherently designed to promote a balanced and flourishing society. Ethical Governance: Raji argues that the absence of ethical grounding in governance leads to societal inequities and injustices. By embedding the Maqasid principles into policy-making, leaders can foster a governance model that not only meets economic and political goals but also enhances the spiritual and moral welfare of the community. Global and Historical Perspectives: The book draws on various global examples and historical contexts to illustrate how integrating spiritual values into secular governance has been beneficial. Examples include Malaysia's Islamic finance system and environmental conservation policies influenced by indigenous beliefs in New Zealand, showcasing the practical application and benefits of this approach. The Action Plan Adopting Maqasid in Policy Making: Governments should begin by training policymakers in the Maqasid framework to ensure that they understand how to integrate these principles into everyday governance. This includes workshops and collaborative projects with scholars familiar with Maqasid. Policy Evaluation and Reform: Existing policies should be evaluated against the Maqasid principles to identify areas of improvement. This could lead to reforms that focus more on human dignity, equity, and the common good, rather than solely on economic outcomes. Public Engagement and Education: Engage the public through educational programs that explain the benefits of Maqasid in governance. This can increase public support for reforms and encourage a more active civic participation in the governance process. Blind Spot One potential misconception is that Maqasid principles may only be applicable to Islamic countries. However, Raji argues that these principles are universal in nature and can be adapted by any country regardless of the dominant religious or secular framework, aiming to enhance the ethical foundation of governance across diverse cultural contexts. Connected Knowledge For further reading and a deeper understanding of the concepts discussed in "Heaven Is Under the Feet of Governments," readers might explore "The Maqasid: A Guide to Shari'ah Governance" by Jasser Auda and "Islamic Finance: Law, Economics, and Practice" by Mahmoud El-Gamal. These works provide additional insights into the practical applications of Maqasid in different sectors and how they can be harmonized with contemporary governance models. Explore the transformative power of ethical governance in "Heaven Is Under the Feet of Governments."This compelling read delves into the Maqasid framework, advocating for policies rooted in universal values to create just societies. Perfect for policymakers, scholars, and anyone interested in societal change, this book offers a blueprint for integrating spirituality into governance. How To Be Sure You Re Going To Heaven written by Michael Taylor and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-16 with Religion categories.

One of the most difficult things for us to do is picture ourselves dead, lying in a casket, about to be placed six feet under the earth. The reason why is because we are all, to some degree, afraid of death. So do you know what we do? We simply choose not to think about it. I mean death can be scary to think about because in the last few moments of our life, we have to deal with the inevitable question: Will God allow me to enter through those pearly gates into the heavenly city? Or will he cast me into hell, into unquenchable fire? So the real question is “How can a person be sure, absolutely certain, that when they die, they will spend eternity in heaven?” Can a person be sure? Yes! And that’s why this book has been written. It has been written to give you hope and assurance, based upon the scriptures, that if you receive Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, you will spend eternity in heaven when you die. This book provides answers to the following questions: • How can a person become a Christian? • How can you be sure you are a Christian? • How can you be sure you’re saved? • Can a Christian ever lose his salvation? • Can a Christian sin as much as he wants without consequences? • Can a Christian be sure he’s going to heaven?

An Altar In The World written by Barbara Brown Taylor and has been published by Canterbury Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-31 with Religion categories.

In this highly acclaimed and lyrical modern classic, bestselling author Barbara Brown Taylor reveals the countless ways we can discover divine depths in the small things we do and see every day. While people will often go to extraordinary lengths in search of a 'spiritual experience', she shows that the stuff of our everyday lives is a holy ground where we can encounter God at every turn. For her, as for Jacob in the Genesis story, even barren, empty deserts can become "the house of God and the gate of heaven", places where a ladder of angels connects heaven to earth and earth to heaven. An Altar in the World reveals concrete ways to discover the sacred in such ordinary occurrences as hanging out the washing, doing the supermarket shop, feeding an animal, or losing our way. It will transform our understanding of ourselves and the world we live in, and renew our sense of wonder at the extraordinary gift of life.
