This book examines ideas of spiritual nourishment as maintained chiefly by Patristic theologians –those who lived in Byzantium. It shows how a particular type of Byzantine frescoes and icons illustrated the views of Patristic thinkers on the connections between the heavenly and the earthly worlds. The author explores the occurrence, and geographical distribution, of this new type of iconography that manifested itself in representations concerned with the human body, and argues that these were a reaction to docetist ideas. The volume also investigates the diffusion of saints’ cults and demonstrates that this took place on a North-South axis as their veneration began in Byzantium and gradually reached the northern part of Europe, and eventually the entirety of Christendom.

The focus of the book is a particular region of the Byzantine Empire, Cappadocia, within Anatolia, in the centre of what is now Turkey. Its history as a part of this confederation of territories coincides with the medieval period in Europe. This monograph deals with various aspects of the province; it begins with its environment and climate, goes to some of its institutions and buildings, and ends with the paintings which the art-ists employed to decorate the latter, as well as with a particular type of inscriptions (those along the frontiers). It also considers education in Cappadocia during the Byzantines. The study is a scholarly/professional work that draws on the author's current research as well as on the material which the author developed in the last four years while teaching for the University of Ox-ford.

The book is about academic happenings that took me around the world on a journey I never dreamed of and I am not sure I wanted; almost everything that happened was and still is a surprise to me. I write it as a kind of activity report. This not a journal since I have not written regularly in its pages. It is a publication about what I remember mostly from my professional life and what I usually do as a professor at the University of Oxford; of course, some of my thoughts pop up here from time to time. I do not think there are many people who have studied and taught in Toronto, Ottawa, Sydney and Oxford, met and had discussions with Jacques Derrida, Umberto Eco, Noam Chomsky, Yehudi Menuhin, Roger Penrose (Nobel Prize Laureate), Richard Swinburne, and David Chalmers for example, and are still part of the conversations taking place in the intellectual world today. I have often been asked what it is like in Oxford and the institution where I have worked for 26 years and where I still work, so what I say may be of interest. Besides, I feel a kind of duty to do this because I have had the chance to find myself in extraordinary situations in the good sense of the word, and it seems only right to express my gratitude by recounting some of them.

This volume offers the first comparative, interdisciplinary, and intercultural examination of the lactating woman – biological mother and othermother – in antiquity and early Byzantium. Adopting methodologies and knowledge deriving from a variety of disciplines, the volume’s contributors investigate the close interrelationship between a woman and her lactating breasts, as well as the social, ideological, theological, and medical meanings and uses of motherhood, childbirth, and breastfeeding, along with their visual and literary representations. Breastfeeding and the work of mothering are explored through the study of a great variety of sources, mainly works of Greek-speaking cultures, written and visual, anonymous and eponymous, which were mostly produced between the first and the seventh century AD. Due to their multiple interdisciplinary dimensions, ancient and early Byzantine lactating women are approached through three interconnected thematic strands having a twofold focus: society and ideology, medicine and practice, and art and literature. By developing the model of the lactating woman, the volume offers a new analytical framework for understanding a significant part of the still unwritten cultural history of the period. At the same time, the volume significantly contributes to the emerging fields of breast and motherhood studies. The new and significant knowledge generated in the fields of ancient and Byzantine studies may also prove useful for cultural historians in general and other disciplines, such as literary studies, art history, history of medicine, philosophy, theology, sociology, anthropology, and gender studies.

Önsöze not düşmek istediğim pek çok konuyu genel bir başlık altında giriş bölümüne bırakmayı yeğledim ve hatta giriş bölümünü, tekrara düşmemek adına, kitap içerisindeki diğer yazılar tamamlandıktan sonra kaleme aldım. Bir akademisyen gözüyle değil de, bir sanat tarihçisi olarak yemekle sanatın ilişkisini ya da sanatın yemekle ilişkisini kavramsal olarak sorgulayan bir dizi akademik ve hatta popüler yazıyı gözden geçirdiğimde karşıma çıkan yayınların çoğunun ülke dışından olmasının beni hayal kırıklığına uğratmasından mıdır bilmem; neden dedim? Ki açıklayacağım... Görsel sanatlarla yemeğin, mutfağın, sofraların vs. ilişkisini kurma ve sorgulama işi aslında insanlık tarihine dair az çok fikir sahibi olmayı gerektirir, bir yandan da ticaret, botanik, kültür, sosyoloji, vs... Ve yemek meselesinin insanlık tarihi içerisinde daha sıfır noktasında var olduğunu ve bu bağlamda eğer böylesi bir kitaba bir giriş yazılacaksa, başlangıç noktasını da ta en başa taşımak gerektiğini düşündüm; tabiri caizse kitabın başında biraz “Amerika yeniden keşfedilmeli”ydi. Bir yandan bu konu aslında yazarın neyi bildiğiyle ve yazmak istediğiyle değil, onun yazdıklarını okuyacak, kendi süzgecinden geçirecek, yazdıklarından keyif alacak olanların -yani okurun- beklentisiyle de ilişkiliydi. Sâhi okur, yazardan ne beklerdi? Böyle bir soruyu kalıplaşmış bilgi sistemleri ile donatılmış ve insanlığın genetik kodlarıyla nesilden nesile aktarılan, dinle şekillenen ve hatta gelenekselleşen düşünce sistemini haiz “modern” zihinler açısından ele almanın zorluğu, cevabı oldukça karmaşık hale getirir. Velhâsıl Kitap yazma meselesinde, yazılmamış olanı yazmak, yazılmış olanın üzerine yeni bir şey söylemek ya da bilime, sanata, edebiyata, kısacası yazın dünyasına ve okurun okuma hazzına katkı sağlayacak olmanın verdiği gönül rahatlığıyla yazılmış bir kitap her şeyin ötesindedir. Üstelik ve bu bağlamda, modern Sanat Tarihi yazıcılığı, artık istatistikî, eski moda, var olanı tekrarlamaktan öteye geçemeyen anlayışından uzaklaştığı için, sanatın, imgeler dünyasının ve sembolizminin makro evreni üzerine yazmak, adeta bir konuyu bir arkeolog edasıyla, kazarcasına yazmak, yazara müthiş keyif veren bir şeydir. Öte yandan modern düşünce sistemleri üzerinden sunulan sanat tarihsel çıktılar, metodolojik yaklaşımı sağlam bir temele oturduğunda, okuru besler; var olana başka gözle bakmayı güdüler. Sanat tarihindeki “klasik” anlayış Erwin Panosky’nin imgeleri belli kalıba oturtan ikonolojik yaklaşımını benimser. Oysaki sanat tarihinin çok-disiplinli günümüz metodolojisine uyarlılığı ve bunu benimseyişi bir noktada Panofsky’nin resim/imge çözümleme üzerine savladığını yalnızca kullanır; fakat başka pek çok şeyden de beslenir. Bir noktadaysa sanatın tarihindeki imgelerin yorumunun, izleyicinin bellek kalıbı doğrultusunda şekillendiğini unutmamak gerekir. Bellekler tarihle, zamanla, olaylarla, bireysel yaşantılarla, inanışlarla, öğretilenlerle, öğretilmişliklerle şekillenir ve sürekli evrilir.
