Metal Studies is a genuinely interdisciplinary research field. However, different specialist traditions, differing theoretical and methodological approaches, and also terminological "translation difficulties" make collaboration within the field difficult. This volume aims to explore the potential and limitations of interdisciplinary work by examining an example area - the laws of Heavy Metal - from the point of view of central disciplines. Laws are regarded as social conventions - i.e., rules that are made by human beings and are culturally stable. Examples of laws include conventions of musical language, the dress code in the metal scene, behavioural norms, and conventions in writing song lyrics. The volume includes contributions from the fields of law, social ethics, art history, religious studies, musicology, sociology, linguistics, and cultural history.

In der vorliegenden Pionierstudie untersucht der Kulturhistoriker Peter Pichler, wie die lokale Metal-Szene in Graz und der Steiermark in den letzten 40 Jahren durch diese Aspekte geprägt wurde. In der Arbeit werden die persönlichen Gründe aus individuellen Lebensläufen mit Bezugnahme auf körperliche Eigenschaften beleuchtet, um darzustellen wie mit dem Körper als Akteur gehandelt wird. Diese eigene Identität in der Szenekultur wird im Sinne von Gugutzer durch voneinander abhängige Erfahrungen im Spannungsverhältnis von Leibsein (Bezug zur Innenwelt) und dem expressiven Körper (Bezug zur Außenwelt) gebildet. Der Blick auf Körperlichkeiten in Zusammenhang mit einer Szenezugehörigkeit ist von hoher Relevanz, da dem Körper, dessen Gestaltung, Formung und Präsentation unterschiedliche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet wird. Diese Aufmerksamkeit kann sich in den verschiedenen Lebensphasen unterscheiden. Es entsteht so die Forschungsfrage: Wie stellt sich die Zugehörigkeit zur Heavy Metal Szene nach Vollendung der Adoleszenz in Bezugnahme auf Körperlichkeiten dar?
