Excerpt from Hebrew Life and Times Most histories have been histories of kings and em perors. The daily life of the common people - their joys and sorrows, their hopes, achievements, and ideals - has been buried in oblivion. The historical narratives of the Bible are, indeed, to a' great extent an exception to this rule. They tell us much about the everyday life of peasants and slaves. The Bible's Chief heroes were not kings nor nobles. Its supreme Hero was a peasant workingman. But we have not always studied the Bible from this point Of view. In this course we shall try to reconstruct for ourselves the story of the Hebrew people as an account of Hebrew Shepherds, farmers, and such like: what oppressions they endured; how they were de livered; and above all what ideals of righteousness and truth and mercy they cherished, and how they came to think and feel about God. It makes little difierence to us what particular idler at any particular time sat in the palace at Jerusalem sending forth tax-collectors to raise funds for his luxuries. It is of very great interest and concern to us if there were daughters like Ruth in the barley fields of Bethlehem, if shepherds tended their flocks in that same country who were so fine in heart and simple in faith that to them or their children visions of angels might appear telling Of a Saviour of the world. On such as these, in this study, let us as far as possible fix our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Social Life, of the Hebrews The designation of the period of Hebrew life which is considered in this part Of the present work is not as easy as it at first thought seems, for the term here employed, the usual one, is misleading, though per haps not as misleading to many as some other might be. The time covered is from the settlement of Canaan to the monarchy. This was a period when the Hebrews for the most part were wanting in unity, when the clans grouped themselves in certain parts of Canaan, revealing in some instances their kinship, as in the case of the Leah and Rachel clans. If there had been something akin to national life prior to the settlement, during their nomadic wanderings, it must have grown very largely out of the circumstances of that life. When they entered Canaan, as there will be an endeavour to Show later, they went up in groups to their various allotments or destinations and es tablished themselves as best they could. Later, on rare occasions, clan aided clan, and on occasions rarer still, group or tribe aided some clan in extremity. Not apparently until near the close Of this period. Excerpt from Leopold Zunz: His Life and Times One of the outstanding Jewish literary develop ments of the nineteenth century is closely connected with the-name of Yom Tob Lippmann Zunz more familiarly known as Leopold Zunz. This was the employment of a new method in Jewish scholarship. Hitherto Jewish scholarship had been almost entirely one - sided. The study of the Talmud, for instance, was with few exceptions limited to the knowledge of its contents to the complete neglect of its sociological background and historical growth. The age of Enlightenment introduced by Mendelssohn in the 18th century did not bring any real improvement in this respect as the Haskalah movement had an entirely different aim, to make the Jews acquaint with general culture. Lack of comprehension of the historical development of the Jewish people and its literature remained therefore as stron ly marked as before. The method introduced by tuuz, however, completely revolutionized Jewish learning, to such an extent as to make it possible to speak of Modern Jewish Scholarship. A record of the life and work of such a man cannot fail to be of interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Judaism as Creed and Life Thus much in reply to the possible charge that I have given a mere anthology, - that I have provided a collection of elegant extracts at the cost of ignoring the less attrac tive teachings. I have certainly made many quotations, especially in the section on Ethics. But I have done so intentionally. My aim has been to give some idea of the nobility of thought which characterises the Jewish doctrine of post-biblical times. The passages I have cited are but specimens of the vast moral and spiritual wealth to be found in the Talmudic and medieval literatures. Excerpt from Hebrew Politics in the Times of Sargon and Sennacherib: An Inquiry Into the Historical Meaning and Purpose of the Prophecies of Isaiah, With Some Notice of Their Bearings on the Social and Political Life of England IT is now many years ago that, by the advice of my friend Mr. Maurice, I proposed to myself to make the science of Politics my study. In order to give Jewish History and Politics their proper place in that study I chose the period of which this Volume treats and the reader is here offered the results of my inquiry. The present edition has been revised throughout, and considerable additions have been made to it. This period - the last half of the eighth century b.c. Is of characteristic importance in the history of the Jewish nation, which had now reached its highest point of civiliza tion, and was come into contact with the Assyrian Power, which was overwhelming the Eastern world. Its social and religious condition, and its politics, home and foreign, are known to us through the contemporary discourses of the Prophets, the political and religious advisers of the kings and people. A new and interesting light is thrown upon it by the Assyrian Inscriptions, which show us, as facts, many events and, circumstances of which, without them, we could only infer the existence. And the genius of Isaiah, the greatest of the prophets of that or any time, has called out a series of learned and thoughtful commem taries on his writings, such as are hardly available for the student of any other book. Excerpt from Jewish Artisan Life in the Time of Jesus: According to the Oldest Sources It is a circle of young mechanics whom 1 address, and I may well take it for granted, that there is none of you who does not daily bow his knee in the name of Jesus. For this very reason I could apprehend that the choice of my theme might not only flatter an unentitled pride of the mechanic, but also wound your Christian conscious ness. But I do not apprehend this. You well know that the same Jesus whom we adore is the exalted One. In that glory, which is the reward of his self-humilia tion, he is exalted infinitely above all the earthly relations which he entered, and through which he passed. If we consider the state of his self-humiliation apart from his exaltation, only a false awe, an undue delicacy, could prevent us from making the statement of the Nazarenes both the starting-point and end of our attempt in con sidering the relation of Jesus to handicraft in connection with the history of his times. Excerpt from The Temple: Its Ministry and Services as They Were at the Time of Jesus Christ While thus deriving my materials at first hand, I have also thankfully made use of any and every help within my reach.. Foremost I place here the writings of Maimonides, not only because he is of greatest authority among the Jews, but because his vast and accurate knowledge of these subjects, and the clear ness and subtlety of his intellect, entitle him to that position. Next to him come the numerous writers on Biblical Antiquities, in Latin and German works on Typology - scientific and popular; treatises on the Life and Times of our Lord; histories of the Jewish Nation, or of Judaism commentaries on such passages in the Old and New Testament as bore on these subjects; and numerous treatises on cognate points. In my study of ancient Jerusalem, I had the benefit of the labours of recent explorers, from Robinson and Barclay to the volumes published under the auspices of the Palestine Exploration Fund.
