The miniatures which enhance medieval Hebrew manuscripts, whether in prayerbooks, ceremonials for feast days, ritual, legal or philosophical treatises, clearly reflect various aspects of Jewish life during the period. In addition to religious and ceremonial practices, the many facets of everyday life in the family, in cities and in the countryside are treated, as are social and economic activities at all levels and in all professions. Drawing upon the surviving miniatures in illuminated Hebrew manuscripts as primary source material, Thérèse and Mendel Metzger have reconstructed a detailed and exhaustive account of Jewish life in Europe during the Middle Ages. The volume is divided into five sections which encompass historic and geographic background, everyday surroundings, family life and education, social and economic life, and religious activity.--From publisher description.

Manekin and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-17 with Philosophy categories.

This book surveys Hebrew manuscripts of Aristotelian philosophy and logic. It presents a translation and revision of part of Moritz Steinschneider’s monumental Die Hebraeischen Übersetzungen des Mittelalters und die Juden als Dolmetscher (The Hebrew Translations of the Middle Ages and the Jews as Interpreters). This resource was first published in 1893. It remains to this day the authoritative account of the transmission and development of Arabic and Latin, and, by way of those languages, Greek culture to medieval and renaissance Jews. The editors have updated Steinschneider’s bibliography. They have also judiciously revised some of his scholarly judgments. In addition, the volume provides an exhaustive listing of pertinent Hebrew manuscripts and their whereabouts. The section on logic, including texts hitherto unknown, represents the latest research in the history of medieval logic in Hebrew. This publication is the second in a series of volumes that translates, updates, and, where necessary, revises parts of Steinschneider’s bio-bibliographical classic work on Hebrew manuscripts of philosophical encyclopedias, manuals, and logical writings. Historians of medieval culture and philosophy, and also scholars of the transmission of classical culture to Muslims, Christians, and Jews, will find this volume indispensable.

The Jewish Middle Ages were not, as was once supposed, full of 'doom, gloom and pedantry'. Medieval Hebrew manuscripts testify to stunning theology, super-rational exegesis, and interesting notions of language usage. There are unexpectedly 'modern' interpretations of the Hebrew Bible in Spain and France and exciting fragments from the Cairo Genizah, including a prayer to be recited by medieval pilgrims to Jerusalem. Among more prosaic Genizah items are a crusader note in Latin, a certificate about kosher cheeses, an appeal for financial assistance, and a doctor's faith in God over his own medicine. Stefan C. Reif shows that Medieval Hebrew culture is a vibrant and compelling field of study.

Hebrew manuscripts of the Middle Ages were the products of highly marginalized Jewish communities, widely dispersed within the great Christian and Islamic civilizations around the Mediterranean and further afield. Created by a religious, cultural and ethnic minority, they not only mirror the intellectual activity and interests of their producers, but also provide evidence of cross-cultural influences in all areas of book production during the period.
