This paper derives statements of the Heckscher-Ohlin Theorem which remain valid in the presence of market power. Following Helpman (1 984a), the paper explores restrictions on permissible trade patterns that are implied by the post-trade equilibrium conditions of Heckscher- Ohlin theory. Restrictions on the patterns of commodity trade are derived to complement Helpman's factor content version of the competitive Heckscher-Ohlin theory, and the introduction of factor market power is shown to leave the validity of these restrictions unaffected, Restrictions on the pattern of Heckscher-Ohlin trade in the presence of product market power are also derived, and conditions are stated under which Helpman's competitive factor content restrictions continue to hold.

This book provides a theory of trade between countries in at least one of which the pattern of competitive markets is disturbed by a powerful national labour union and in which, therefore, wage distortions are endogenous; the book then proceeds to re-examine the several comparative-equilibrium questions of conventional trade theory. In addition, several questions are confronted which can be posed only in the new framework. In Chapters II and III, two well-known models of production and trade are taken. In Chapter IV the analysis of Chapter II is reconsidered under the assumption that there is a strong labour union in each trading country. Chapters V-VII broaden the scope of analysis by allowing for capital accumulation and its interaction with union policies.

A Theory of International Trade Under Uncertainty analyzes international trade in goods and securities in the presence of uncertainty using an integrated general equilibrium framework that recognizes the dependence of markets for goods on financial markets and vice versa. To collect articles on recent policy issues is of course always also a question of taste. This volume tries to represent a broad range of papers which covers the double dividend hypothesis, the role of non-profit organizations for environmental policies, trade implications and international environmental agreements. It consists of two parts, a part on domestic policy issues and a part on international policy issues. A separate part on international policy issues would not have been on the agenda when this volume would have been published two decades ago. But international and global environmental problems are different from purely national problems and deserve a special approach. However, also domestic policies face new challenges. One new focus of domestic policies is the discussion on the relationship between environmental benefits and other policy objectives. 'Some Remarks on the Double Dividend Hypothesis' by Christian Scholz deals with this discussion. In opposition to a number of recent papers it is found that the possibility for a double dividend depends largely on the substitutability characteristics of taxed commodities.
