In "Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God," G. W. F. Hegel presents a compelling philosophical investigation into the nature of divine existence, integrating metaphysical inquiry with rigorous logic. Rooted in the tradition of Enlightenment thought, Hegel engages with the ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments, aiming not only to establish the existence of God but also to explore the implications of this existence for human understanding and ethics. His dialectical method unfolds systematically, encouraging readers to see truth as a dynamic, evolving process rather than a static conclusion, a hallmark of Hegelian philosophy that positions the lectures within a broader context of German idealism and theological discourse of the 19th century. Hegel, as a pivotal figure in philosophy, was influenced by his background in Lutheran theology and his critical engagement with Enlightenment rationalism. His scholarly journey through different philosophical schools, coupled with his experiences during the turbulent socio-political climate of his time, equipped him with a unique perspective that sought to reconcile faith and reason. This background informs his nuanced approach to divine existence, where he contemplates both the abstract and the concrete aspects of faith. "Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God" is a critical read for scholars and enthusiasts of philosophy, theology, and the history of ideas. This text encourages readers to grapple with profound questions about existence, God, and human agency, showcasing Hegel's brilliance in blending rigorous philosophical inquiry with spiritual introspection. It is an essential addition to any intellectual's library, promising to spark deep reflection and debate.

The Hegel Lectures Series Series Editor: Peter C. Hodgson Hegel's lectures have had as great a historical impact as the works he himself published. Important elements of his system are elaborated only in the lectures, especially those given in Berlin during the last decade of his life. The original editors conflated materials from different sources and dates, obscuring the development and logic of Hegel's thought. The Hegel Lectures series is based on a selection of extant and recently discovered transcripts and manuscripts. Lectures from specific years are reconstructed so that the structure of Hegel's argument can be followed. Each volume presents an accurate new translation accompanied by an editorial introduction and annotations on the text, which make possible the identification of Hegel's many allusions and sources. Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God Hegel lectured on the proofs of the existence of God as a separate topic in 1829. He also discussed the proofs in the context of his lectures on the philosophy of religion (1821-31), where the different types of proofs were considered mostly in relation to specific religions. The text that he prepared for his lectures in 1829 was a fully formulated manuscript and appears to have been the first draft of a work that he intended to publish and for which he signed a contract shortly before his death in 1831. The 16 lectures include an introduction to the problem of the proofs and a detailed discussion of the cosmological proof. Philipp Marheineke published these lectures in 1832 as an appendix to the lectures on the philosophy of religion, together with an earlier manuscript fragment on the cosmological proof and the treatment of the teleological and ontological proofs as found in the 1831 philosophy of religion lectures. Hegel's 1829 lectures on the proofs are of particular importance because they represent what he actually wrote as distinct from auditors' transcriptions of oral lectures. Moreover, they come late in his career and offer his final and most seasoned thinking on a topic of obvious significance to him, that of the reality status of God and ways of knowing God. These materials show how Hegel conceived the connection between the cosmological, teleological, and ontological proofs. All of this material has been newly translated by Peter C. Hodgson from the German critical editions by Walter Jaeschke. This edition includes an editorial introduction, annotations on the text, and a glossary and bibliography.

Hegel's analysis of his culture identifies nihilistic tendencies in modernity i.e., the death of God and end of philosophy. Philosophy and religion have both become hollowed out to such an extent that traditional disputes between faith and reason become impossible because neither any longer possesses any content about which there could be any dispute; this is nihilism. Hegel responds to this situation with a renewal of the ontological argument (Logic) and ontotheology, which takes the form of philosophical trinitarianism. Hegel on the Proofs and Personhood of God examines Hegel's recasting of the theological proofs as the elevation of spirit to God and defense of their content against the criticisms of Kant and Jacobi. It also considers the issue of divine personhood in the Logic and Philosophy of Religion. This issue reflects Hegel's antiformalism that seeks to win back determinate content for truth (Logic) and the concept of God. While the personhood of God was the issue that divided the Hegelian school into left-wing and right-wing factions, both sides fail as interpretations. The center Hegelian view is both virtually unknown, and the most faithful to Hegel's project. What ties the two parts of the book together--Hegel's philosophical trinitarianism or identity as unity in and through difference (Logic) and his theological trinitarianism, or incarnation, trinity, reconciliation, and community (Philosophy of Religion)--is Hegel's Logic of the Concept. Hegel's metaphysical view of personhood is identified with the singularity (Einzelheit) of the concept. This includes as its speculative nucleus the concept of the true infinite: the unity in difference of infinite/finite, thought and being, divine-human unity (incarnation and trinity), God as spirit in his community.

In "Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God," G. W. F. Hegel meticulously examines traditional and contemporary arguments for the existence of a divine being, weaving them into a robust philosophical narrative that reflects his dialectical method. The text navigates through metaphysical inquiries, offering a critical synthesis of theistic proofs ranging from cosmological to ontological arguments, presented in a clear, engaging style. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century German idealism, Hegel's lectures not only provide an extensive philosophical discourse but also invite readers to grapple with the complexities of faith and reason within the modern context. G. W. F. Hegel, a pivotal figure in German philosophy, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous intellectual climate of his time, as well as his engagement with Kantian philosophy and the works of Spinoza and Schelling. His religious background and personal struggles with faith profoundly shaped Hegel's inquiry into the existence of God, rendering his exploration both poignant and rigorously systematic. These elements contribute to a foundational comprehension of Hegel's thoughts on divinity, which not only reflects his philosophical evolution but also offers insights into the nature of belief itself. "Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God" is an essential read for anyone interested in the intersection of philosophy and theology. Hegel's work challenges readers to reconsider their own presuppositions regarding faith and existence, making it a vital contribution to the ongoing dialogue surrounding divinity. Engaging deeply with Hegel'Äôs arguments enhances not only one'Äôs understanding of his philosophical system but also encourages a broader reflection on the existence and nature of God.

In addition to correcting many common misunderstandings about the ontological argument, the author highlights what appears to be an irremovable tension between the conclusion and the explanation of the proof. Both the common objections to the argument and its historical development in early modern philosophy are explained in light of this tension.

Each volume presents an accurate new translation accompanied by an editorial introduction and annotations on the text, which make possible the identification of Hegel's many allusions and sources. Hegel's Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion represent the final and in some ways the decisive element of his entire philosophical system. His conception and execution of the lectures differed significantly on each of the occasions he delivered them, in 1821, 1824, 1827, and 1831. The older editions introduced insoluble problems by conflating these materials into an editorially constructed text. The present volumes establish a critical edition by separating the series of lectures and presenting them as independent units on the basis of a complete re-editing of the sources by Walter Jaeschke. The English translation has been prepared by a team consisting of Robert F. Brown, Peter C. Hodgson, and J. Michael Stewart, with the assistance of H. S. Harris. Now widely recognized as the definitive English edition, it is being reissued by Oxford in the Hegel Lectures Series. The three volumes include editorial introductions, critical annotations on the text, textual variants, and tables, bibliography, and glossary. Hegel's 'Introduction' establishes the new discipline of philosophy of religion and positions it vis-à-vis the philosophical, theological, cultural, and epistemological issues of the time. 'The Concept of Religion' sets forth a speculative definition of religion and discusses the experience, concept, knowledge, and worship of God.
