Der Ort Schilo begegnet in Texten unterschiedlicher Couleur innerhalb des Alten Testaments. Mit dem heutigen Khirbet Sailūn identifiziert ist die Ortslage auch von archäologischem Interesse. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt sowohl die archäologischen als auch exegetischen Perspektiven zu Schilo auf und korreliert diese miteinander. Im Zuge der Textanalyse arbeitet Ann-Kathrin Knittel die Entwicklung und Anreicherung des Schilobildes innerhalb des Alten Testaments und die konnektive Funktion des Heiligtums für die Konstruktion der Geschichte Israels heraus. Sie kann zeigen, dass die jüdische Tradition, nach der Schilo das wichtigste Vorgängerheiligtum Jerusalems war, nicht nur durch die Gestaltung der Einzeltexte angestoßen wurde, sondern die literarische Erfolgsgeschichte Schilos sukzessive genau dieses Bild aufbaut.
