Dies ist der Katalog für die Ausstellung "Heinrich Stegemann 1888 - 1945: Bilder vom Krieg." Vor 70 Jahren starb in Hamburg der Maler und Bildhauer Heinrich Stegemann, den Zeitgenossen als „einen der besten Repräsentanten der deutschen Kunst“ ansahen. Der Krieg bildet in deinem großem Oeuvre einen Schwerpunkt. Als 26jähriger wurde er, 1915 aus dem Studium in Italien zurückkehrend, an die Westfront geschickt. Stegemann kämpfte bis 1918 teilweise an schweren Frontabschnitten, wurde verwundet und verschüttet, nach einem Lazarettaufenthalt erneut an der Front eingesetzt. Die Front-Erlebnisse gehörten zu den bittersten seines Lebens und verfolgten ihn traumatisch bis zum Lebensende. Der Einsicht in die eigene Machtlosigkeit begegnete er, indem er sich den Druck von der Seele malte. Die Ausstellung spannt den Bogen vom Ersten bis zur Zerstörung Hamburgs im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
