On 22 April 1915, the men of the 1st Canadian Division faced chlorine gas, a new lethal weapon against which they had no defence. In defiance of a particularly horrible death, or, at the very least, severe lung injury, these untested Canadians fought almost continuously for four days, often hand-to-hand, as they clung stubbornly against overwhelming odds to a vital part of the Allied line after the French units on their left fled in panic. By doing so, they saved 50,000 troops in the Ypres salient from almost certain destruction, and, in addition, prevented the momentum of the war from tipping in favour of the Germans. In this new, deeply researched account, the distinguished military historian George H. Cassar skillfully blends into the history of the battle the graphic and moving words of the men on the front line. Illustrated with outstanding photographs and numerous maps, and drawing from diaries, letters, and documents from every level of planning, Hell in Flanders Fields is an authoritative, gripping drama of politics, strategy, and human courage.

Few people alive today had direct experience of the First World War, and yet it seems embedded in the collective consciousness of the combatant nations as a warning to future generations of the futility of military conflict. Our awareness of the terror, loneliness and desperate hope endured by the men who fought this war we owe to the quality of the art that came out of it, not least the poetry. Despite the passage of time, its ability to move and inspire us remains undimmed, as this superb new compilation richly demonstrates. Selected from the work of soldiers killed in action - starting with Rupert Brooke in 1915 and ending with the tragic loss of Wilfred Owen seven days before the Armistice - the poems capture a broad range of emotions, contemplations and states of mind, ranging from anthems about the brutality of war to wistful evocations of home and loved ones left behind. This collection showcases some of the best poetry to emerge from the conflict and stands as a worthy memorial to the collective talent and sacrifice of those who gave their lives.

It was the celebrated Canadian physician and poet Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae that wrote the famous lines “In Flanders fields the poppies blow" as an opening to his famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. His countrymen had shed their blood copiously in fighting the Germans on the Western Front and earned an outstanding reputation as fighting troops. Despite perhaps lacking a bit of ‘spit and polish’, they would be exchanged by no Allied commander for other troops. His compatriot George Gibson wrote ‘Maple Leaves in Flanders Fields’ as a lasting testament of the achievements and character of his fellow Canadian soldiers. His book is not a bold statement of the engagements, battles and victories that the Canadians were involved in, but rather the story of the Canadians by a Canadian with a humorous tone and self-effacing modesty. Although there are many battle scenes depicted with great skill and vividness, it is perhaps the moments of quiet that display the character of the Canadian troops most; for example, an exchange at a hand-over of the line: Sentry. “Halt! Who goes there?” Answer. “First Grenadiers.” Sentry. “Pass, first Grenadiers; all’s well.” Sentry. “Halt! Who goes there?” Answer. “What the Hell is that to you?” Sentry. “Pass, Canadians; all’s well.” A fine testament to the achievements and noble sacrifice of the Canadian Corps on the Western Front. Author — Gibson, George Herbert Rae, 1881-1932 Introduction —Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham, K.C.B. (11 November 1841 – 28 October 1918) Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New York, Dutton, 1916. Original Page Count – xi and 268 pages.

Trial By Gas written by George H. Cassar and has been published by Potomac Books, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12 with History categories.

World War I has long captured the macabre imagination for the seemingly willful manner in which nations sent their young men to die in droves while fighting over essentially the same patch of land for four long years. The vision of those senseless deaths becomes even harsher and more depraved when we consider how many soldiers were killed by poison gas. In May 1915 the long and bloody Second Battle of Ypres gained notoriety for the participants’ use of poison gas, the first time the weapon had been used in battle. With both sides realizing the importance of victory in Ypres, moral considerations were set aside. Although other, more costly battles of World War I have often overshadowed the Second Battle of Ypres despite the unprecedented use of gas in the latter, that battle now receives an examination commensurate with its significance. In Trial by Gas, George H. Cassar focuses on the conflict’s second half: the battles at Frezenberg Ridge and Bellewaarde Ridge, both of which were fought primarily by British units, taking the reader inside the trenches and behind the desks of those making the decisions. Cassar’s intimate account offers an accurate, clear, and complete chronicle of a battle with a remarkably enduring impact despite its indecisive outcome.

Most Canadians are familiar with John McCrae through his iconic poem "In Flanders Fields," which was penned on the battlefields of the First World War and remains a symbol of remembrance to this day. Although he will always be remembered as a war poet, the Guelph, Ontario, native was a physician, a university professor, and a veteran of the Second Boer War before he ever laid eyes on the carnage at Flanders Fields. Citing rarely seen diary entries and letters, as well as never-before-published photos of McCrae's early life, military historian and McCrae enthusiast Susan Raby-Dunne tells the complete story of John McCrae--a man whose final chapter of life made him immortal, but who accomplished so much and helped so many in the decades before.
