This is the story of one of the earliest Japanese Americans to settle in Florida. How did a poor Japanese immigrant transform himself into one of south Florida's most generous millionaires? He bowed to the earth, gave thanks to the Florida moon, and grew pineapples! Here for the first time in book form is the inspirational story of George Morikami, a true Florida pioneer. In the early 1900s, young Sukeji "George" Morikami lived happily with his family in a quiet Japanese fishing hamlet. But when his true love's parents refused to let him marry her, he was crushed. He left to find his fortune in America, never to see the Japanese moon again. Penniless and unable to speak English, George arrived at Yamato, an upstart farming colony in what is now Boca Raton. George's dreams of earning enough money to return home, buy his own land, and claim his beloved would never be realized. Destiny had other dreams--American dreams--in store for George Morikami. Today, his legacy lives on at the beautiful and unique Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. Next in series > > See all of the books in this series

Fanci Dancy Visits Her Japanese Tomadachi is the second in a series of children's books by Dr. Frances Swayzer Conley. This book, like its predecessor So What If Amy Can't Hear?, extends the ideal of intercultural communication and cooperation. It focuses on the open-mindedness that Fanci, the central character, typically displays with her peers. This young girl and her friend show the ease and innocence with which they are willing to dissolve barriers and to expand their horizons. In a relaxed afternoon setting, Fanci and Sashi are happy that their families have come together for what promises to be a long-term journey of sharing, learning, and growing. Perhaps without even being aware of the high-sounding expression, Fanci and Sashi follow their hearts along the path of multiculturalism.

Manabi and Japanese Schooling: Beyond Learning in the Era of Globalisation considers the theory and practices behind the Japanese concept of Manabi, particularly as the progressive concept of learning in the globalised world. It seeks to provide educational visions of Manabi as an alternative concept of learning in the era of post-globalisation. The authors derive different perspectives in Manabi from Eastern philosophy, clarifying and comparing with learning and Bildung to give alternative educational discourses. It considers the idea of Confucius and Taoism and studies the practice of minna, characterising it as a cooperative and peaceful problem-solving method. Addressing the trend of ‘learnification’ and its contribution to educational reform, it explores the impacts, conflicts and difficulties of introducing learner-centred education into East Asian educational settings as well as the potential of Manabi as an effective tool for all types of learning. Expertly written and researched, this book includes a foreword by Gert Biesta and is a valuable resource for researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the field of educational philosophy, educational theory and Eastern philosophy.

Japanese Politeness written by Yasuko Obana and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-29 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Although the Japanese language is one of the most quoted examples in politeness research, extant publications focus on particular areas of politeness, and very few of them enquire into the varied aspects of Japanese politeness. In this book, Yasuko Obana provides an integrated account of what signifies Japanese politeness. By examining how far previous assumptions can apply to Japanese, Obana exposes a variety of characteristics of Japanese politeness. By taking a diachronic approach, she probes into what constitutes politeness, extracts key elements of the term ‘polite’ in Japanese, and demonstrates how modern honorifics’ apparent diverse, divergent uses and effects can be integrated into a systematic matrix. Furthermore, by quoting traditional Japanese language scholars’ (kokugo gakusha) studies, Obana brings different views into the open. She also carves out politeness strategies in Japanese that have not been adequately explored to date, and which often conform to the way in which honorifi cs behave because they refl ect social indexicality. This book is a good reference for scholars in pragmatics, particularly for those who are working on politeness. It is useful for Japanese language teachers who want to know how to teach Japanese politeness to non-native learners. Postgraduate students of Japanese or pragmatics may also find this book useful for self-study.
