The incorporation of technology into aviation has been exponential. Advancements in microelectronics, stealth technology, engine design, and electronic sensors and displays have converted simple aircraft into formidable flying machines. In this book, recognised experts in aviation helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) summarise 25 years of knowledge and experience in the area of HMD visual, acoustic, and biodynamic performance, and user interface issues such as sizing, fitting, and emergency egress.

Wide field of view, high resolution, detailed visual displays are cruical for the effective simulation of complex air-to-air and air-to-ground combat environments. Current dome and dodecahedron systems are far to costly and lack the combination of required capabilities. The Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL) is currently developing a fiber optic helmet mounted display (FOHMD) system which has the potential for filling these demanding requirements. The breadboard FOHMD, built through a Canadian cost-sharing contract with CAE Electronics, displays a head-slaved high resolution area of interest surrounded by a low resolution background in color. The instantaneous field of view is comparable to the view available to a pilot when wearing an Air Force helmet. Four image generation channels and projectors are used to generate individual displays for each eye. The imagery is piped to the helmet via coherent fiber optic bundles. This system is a valuable research tool for studying many of the issues associated with helmet mounted displays such as image stability, resolution/brightness/field of view trade-offs, and visual perception/fatigue.

This report describes a plan of empirical research to evaluate the training effectiveness of a helmet-mounted display (HMD), and of computer-generated synthetic imagery (CGSI), for low level flight, navigation, and target interaction. This HMD has been developed by the Advanced Simulation Concepts Laboratory of the Naval Training Equipment Center for use in the Navy Visual Technology research Simulator (VTRS). Optics mounted on the pilots's helmet project a scene upon a retro-reflecting screen. Two computer-image generation (CIG) channels are incorporated which present a wide-angle, low-resolution, low-detail background and an area of interest (AOI) of high resolution and detail. Eye and head tracking are used to position the display so that the AOI is presented to the fovea. The goal of HMD is to present a scene to the pilot that is indistinguishable from the real world insofar as pilot performance is concerned. The evaluation plan describes training scenarios emphasizing low level flight and ground interaction, response parameters used in measuring pilot performance, psychological experiments comparing the training efficacy of various aspects of HMD and CGSI, post stimulation subjective measures pf pilot comfort, and the logistics of the research plan itself. Keywords: Eye-slaved display; and Area-of-interest display.

Design Criteria For Reducing Popping In Area Of Interest Displays Preliminary Experiments written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1983 with categories.

A helmet-mounted display being procured for the Navy's Visual Technology Research Simulator will display two computer-generated images of the scene to be viewed by the trainee pilot, the first inset inside the second, following eye direction and showing a higher level of detail version of the scene than the second, low resolution, low detail, wide angle image. Experiments in which spatially and temporally varying sinusoidal bar patterns are displayed on an Optronix Vision Tester suggest that a contrast blend region around the inset will be effective in suppressing the 'popping' of objects and image detail in and out of view as they move across the inset boundary. These experiments also suggest a restriction upon scene modeling which may be helpful in mitigating popping--namely that the largest size of detail associated with a form (the external border between form plus shadow, and background) be changed least. (Internal contours are added or subtracted first.) In further experimentation, locus of attention is shown to have little effect upon perceived popping, but adaptation may have large effects.
