Originally published in 1987, Helping the Problem Drinker addressed the realisation that only a small proportion of problem drinkers ever contacted existing treatment agencies, and that therefore a more comprehensive community-oriented approach should be developed. This included training of primary care health workers and the development of multidisciplinary Community Alcohol Teams. At the time other community-based initiatives such as self-help groups for early problem drinkers and early intervention programmes in general practice and general hospitals, had been implemented. This book draws together what had been learned about these new developments, a number of which had now been evaluated. The book will still be of interest to all planners and professional staff concerned with alcohol problems: both specialists and non-specialists in general medicine, psychiatry, psychology and the social services.

Many teenagers and adults drink alcohol. Many do not. Whether you choose to drink is up to you. In fact, you'll frequently have to decide whether to drink and how much to drink. Even if you decide never to drink, you'll be making such decisions as whether to attend a party where alcohol is served and whether to offer alcohol to your guests. There are many things this booklet does not tell you. It won't tell you whether or not you should drink or how much to drink. It won't make any decisions for you at all. That's because when it comes to drinking, the decisions are always yours. If you would like more information about alcohol, you can read some of the pamphlets and books listed on the inside front cover. You can also write, telephone, or visit one of the agencies which are also listed.

It locates intervention within societal and agency contexts and tackles such practical issues as: how to work with a problem drinker; which short-term goals to suggest; what kind of help to apply; and how to assist in the event of a relapse. The contributors, with backgrounds in academic, statutory, and voluntary settings, focus on key areas of intervention, family, and group contexts, and there is a chapter on the particular circumstances and needs of women.
