Excerpt from The Schools and the Nation When we compare the development of the educational system of the modern State with the development of its political, military, social, and industrial institutions, we can see at once that the former remains a long way behind. This is due not only to the tendency of nations to devote a great deal more attention to the improvement of their physical and material resources than to the cultivation of their spiritual and intellectual powers, but also to the fact that existing educational institutions are not nearly so effective as they might well be without any appreciable increase of cost. There are two defects in particular which we must deplore: (a) the failure to render the present school system an effective instrument in the cause of civic education; (b) the almost complete absence of any adequate provision for the continued training of boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18 - for that part of the population which earns its daily bread through the practical work of commerce, handwork, industry, or agriculture. It was prmted for the first time in the Connecticut Common School Journal in the winter of 1811; an. Again m 1812. As one of the documents appended to his Annual Report to the Board for that year. Since that date it has been repeatedly published. Each time with addi ticani plans ant. Descriptions of new and convenient school-homes. Until upwards of twenty thousand copies have been gratuitously circul tted in the States where the author has been called upon to lilmr in the cause of common-school improvement. Or among the friends of popular educa tion in other parts of the country. At the suggestion of many of these friends, the work has been put into the hands of a publishing house. To be brought before the public. In the hope that it may still continue to help those who are looking round for approved plans of school-houses, by introducing them to the results of much study, observation and experi ence on the part of many laborers in this department of public education. It was the wish of the author to revise that portion of the work in which the general principles of school architecture are discussed. And to arrange the various plans and descriptions of improvements in the construction, internal arrangement, and furniture of school-houses, which have been added to each successive edition in the order of time in which they have been brought to his notice: under appropriate heads. But his time is too much absorbed in the immediate and pressing duties of his office, to admit of his doing any thing beyond a general superintendence of the publica tion. Excerpt from Teachers Cottages In Denmark, for example, the law requires that all rural teach ers be provided with free homes, which are kept up and heated at public expense. The United States Bureau of Education, Bulletin 1913, No. 58, The Educational System of Rural Denmark, says: Country teachers are all provided with free homes. These range from three-room suites in the case of unmarried women teachers to seven or eight rooms for married men. The suites are built, as a rule, in connection with the main school building, using either the second floor or a wing on the first floor. Where more than one teacher lives in the building each suite of rooms invariably has its own separate entrance. This system of teacher housing is very successful and means much for the teacher and for community leadership. Another thing of interest is that all teachers are entitled under the law to a garden. This is planned and planted to shrubbery and fruit at community expense. The garden may vary from a small lot to nearly an acre of ground. In a few instances women teachers accept a sum of money in lieu of the garden. Not alone do the gardens supplement the teachers' incomes, but they are often used as experimental plats for the schools as well. Such schools provided as they are for housing the teachers and making their lives attractive and wholesome, naturally become the rallying centers for all community activities. A sketch of the arrangement of class room, living quarters, play grounds and gardens in a typical one teacher rural school in Den mark is shown on page 8. Excerpt from New Schools for Old: The Regeneration of the Porter School There are many reasons why an account of Mrs. Harvey's work should be given to the public. What she has accomplished in Porter Community has a vital message for everyone who is interested in democracy. She has built up a community able to deal with its own problems and to work together for a constructive realization of the ideals of our country. She has done this by a method that cannot fail to be helpful to every teacher and social worker. It is a method which takes what is at hand as foundation and builds ideals and character qualities that make for success in any environment. The specific reaction upon agricultural problems is the most spectacular result of the work. The school set in a farming region has already produced from a typical stagnated district a group of people enthusiastic over farming as a profession and equipped to turn their enthusiasm into prosperous, permanent farm homes. Excerpt from Our Common Schools: A Fuller Statement of the Views Set Forth in the Pamphlet Entitled, Our Common-School Education A stranger, traveling through New England, marks with not a little sur prise the multitude of school-houses appearing everywhere at little distances. Familiarized as I am to the sight, they have excited no small interest in my mind, particularly as I was traveling through the settlements recently begun. Here, while the inhabitants were still living in log huts, they had not only erected school-houses for their children, but had built them in a neat style, so as to throw an additional appearance of deformity over their own clumsy habitations. This attachment to education in New England is universal, and the situation of that hamlet must be bad indeed which, if it contain a sufficient number of children for a school, does not provide the necessary accommoda tions. In 1803 I found neat school-houses in Colebrook and Stewart, bordering on the Canadian line. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
