Dit tweede boek van de Dīgha Nikāya, de Verzameling van de Lange Verhandelingen van de Boeddha, verzamelt 17 sutta's die, in dit geval, niet overeenkomen met het woord van de Boeddha zelf, maar latere composities zijn die uiteindelijk werden opgenomen als een canonieke verzameling. De belangrijkste verhandeling in dit boek is de Mahasatipatthana, de Grote Verhandeling over de Fundamenten van de Praktijk. De sutta's DN 18, DN 19, DN 20, DN 21, DN 23 zijn valse sutta's. Ze zijn gemarkeerd met een dubbel sterretje (**). De terugkerende thema's in de valse sutta's met de rechtvaardiging van vrouwenhaat, zoals bijvoorbeeld de verklaring dat men afstand moet doen van vrouwelijkheid om als man herboren te worden: Een ander terugkerend thema is de mythomanie waarin men de Boeddha probeert in te passen door hem af te schilderen als een prins... in een republiek. Of dat hij de 32 tekens van de grote man had die van hem een circusfreak zouden maken. En het ontbreekt niet aan een opsomming van goede en slechte dingen, vergelijkbaar met een lijst van geboden, eindigend met een soort beschermingsspreuk. Net als de vorige, en vanwege hun lengte, zijn dit geen redevoeringen van de Boeddha. In dit geval zijn het lange sutta's bedoeld om het zendingswerk van de bhikkhus te ondersteunen bij een publiek dat vreemd is aan de leer. Naast deze twee sutta's valt DN 24: Over Pāṭikaputta op, een amusant verhaal over minachting voor een dwaas. DN 28: Inspiring Confidence, is een opsomming van hoe goed de Boeddha de leer uitlegt en de superioriteit ervan ten opzichte van anderen. Alleen al de Mahasatipatthana en de laatste twee sutta's maken dit boek de moeite waard.
