Le photographe français Henri Cartier-Bressonn (1908-2004) est l'un des grands artistes du XXe siècle. Il est l'inventeur d'un style -"l'instant décisif" -, mélange de vie débordante et de géométrie maîtrisée. Au début des années 1930, Henri Cartier-Bresson rapporte de ses voyages des instantanés surréalistes qui forgent sa légende. Après-guerre, il fonde l'agence Magnum et devient photojournaliste. Durant plus de cinquante ans, le journal Le Monde constitue "un instrument de travail indispensable" dont il se nourrit pour créer une œuvre sans égale. De son côté, Le Monde a plus écrit en cinquante ans sur Cartier-Bresson que sur Picasso ou sur Matisse. Cet ouvrage dévoile et analyse les liens noués entre un photographe de référence et un journal de référence, avec pour point d'orgue le reportage photographique que le maître a réalisé, en 1985, sur Le Monde. Ce fut son dernier. Les soixante-six principaux articles consacrés à Cartier-Bresson dans Le Monde, de 1955 à 2006, sont publiés dans cet ouvrage. De longs entretiens permettent de retrouver la voix forte d'Henri Cartier-Bresson - années de formation, influences, convictions esthétiques, coups de sang. Des textes critiques rendent compte de ses expositions et de ses livres. Des enquêtes mettent à jour les débats autour d'une œuvre qui oscille entre art et journalisme.
