The weird, fetid, familiar discomfort of family is front and centre in these short stories of all the ways we remain a mystery to each other. The mysteries of kinship (families born into and families made) take disconcerting and familiar shapes in these refreshingly frank short stories. A family is haunted by a beast that splatters fruit against its walls every night, another undergoes a near-collision with a bus on the way home from the beach. Mothers are cold, fathers are absent—we know these moments in the abstract, but Adaui makes each as uncanny as our own lives: close but not yet understood.

The Iceberg Family live in The Ice Fjord far, far to the north. The fjord is clean and beautiful like the clearest glass. Here the iceberg children Ice Laug, Ice Finn and Ice Bjorg play all day long. Sometimes seals and whales come to see them, and now and then a hungry polar bear may show up. One day, however, something very special happens. A boat full of people in blue jackets comes into their fjord and begins to circle around them. The icebergs, both the small and the big ones, get frightened. What will happen to their family now? Can they live there safely as they have done up to now? Or will warm currents in the sea make them melt? Will plastic and garbage fill the stomachs of the whales and lead to their death? They have heard some rumours... In this book Lippert has chosen to use some traits from the fairy tale, but without sticking completely to that genre. The mixture of genres is chosen to give the book a modern expression. At the same time the association with well-known fairy tale traits can be a motivator to make the children think their own thoughts. That is the author's intention.

Our Iceberg Is Melting written by John Kotter and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-05 with Business & Economics categories.

The revised and updated tenth anniversary edition of the classic, beloved business fable that has changed millions of lives in organizations around the world. Our Iceberg Is Melting is a simple story about doing well under the stress and uncertainty of rapid change. Based on the award-winning work of Harvard Business School’s John Kotter, it can help you and your colleagues thrive during tough times. On an iceberg near the coast of Antarctica, group of beautiful emperor penguins live as they have for many years. Then one curious bird discovers a potentially devastating problem threatening their home—and almost no one listens to him. The characters in the story—Fred, Alice, Louis, Buddy, the Professor, and NoNo—are like people you probably recognize in your own organization, including yourself. Their tale is one of resistance to change and heroic action, seemingly intractable obstacles and clever tactics for dealing with those obstacles. The penguins offer an inspiring model as we all struggle to adapt to new circumstances. Our Iceberg Is Melting is based on John Kotter's pioneering research into the eight steps that can produce needed change in any sort of group. After finishing the story, you'll have a powerful framework for influencing your own team, no matter how big or small. This tenth anniversary edition preserves the text of the timeless story, together with new illustrations, a revised afterword, and a Q&A with the authors about the responses they've gotten over the past decade. Prepare to be both enlightened and delighted, whether you're already a fan of this classic fable or are discovering it for the first time.

Chasing Icebergs written by Matthew H. Birkhold and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-07 with Science categories.

A deeply intelligent and engrossing narrative that will transform our relationship with water and how we view climate change. The global water crisis is upon us. 1 in 3 people do not have access to safe drinking water; nearly 1 million people die each year as a result. Even in places with adequate freshwater, pollution and poor infrastructure have left residents without basic water security. Luckily, there is a solution to this crisis where we least expect it. Icebergs—frozen mountains of freshwater—are more than a symbol of climate change. In his spellbinding Chasing Icebergs, Matthew Birkhold argues the glistening leviathans of the ocean may very well hold the key to saving the planet. Harvesting icebergs for drinking water is not a new idea. But for the first time in human history, doing so on a massive global scale is both increasingly feasible and necessary for our survival. Chasing Icebergs delivers a kaleidoscopic history of humans’ relationship with icebergs, and offers an urgent assessment of the technological, cultural, and legal obstacles we must overcome to harness this freshwater resource. Birkhold takes readers around the globe, introducing them to a colorful cast of characters with wildly different ideas about how (and if) humans should use icebergs. Sturdy bureaucrats committed to avoiding another Titanic square off against “iceberg cowboys” who wrangle the frozen beasts for profit. Entrepreneurs selling luxury iceberg water for an eye-popping price clash with fearless humanitarians trying to tow icebergs across the globe to eradicate water shortages. Along the way, we meet some of the world’s most renowned scientists to determine how industrial-scale iceberg harvesting could affect the oceans and the poles. And we see firsthand the looming conflict between Indigenous peoples like the Greenlandic Inuit with claims to icebergs and the private corporations that stand to reap massive profits. As Birkhold shepherds readers from Connecticut to South Africa, from Newfoundland to Norway, to Greenland and beyond, he unfurls a visionary argument for cooperation over conflict. It’s not too late for icebergs to save humanity. But we must act fast to form a coalition of scientists, visionaries, engineers, lawyers and diplomats to ensure that the “Cold Rush” doesn’t become a free-for-all.

Voyage Of The Iceberg written by Richard Brown and has been published by James Lorimer & Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-12 with History categories.

This is the story of the most famous iceberg of all time--the iceberg that has gripped the imagination of the world, that humbled human technology and dramatized the wonders and dangers of the North Atlantic Ocean. Author Richard Brown uses the iceberg's story to present the natural history of the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic at the turn of the twentieth century. A rich panoply of birds, whales, bears, seals and other ships cross the path of the iceberg. With an expert's understanding of natural history and an authentic storyteller's voice, Brown weaves these storylines together as the iceberg slowly drifts away from Greenland and down the coast of Labrador to its fateful encounter with the world's most famous ship. With extensive illustrations drawn from volumes of exploration and natural history of the period, this is a beautiful and compelling read. First published in 1983 and championed by publishers worldwide, this reprint of the original edition is accompanied by a brief biographical note on Richard Brown's career as a research scientist working for the Canadian Wildlife Service.

Aqu Hay Icebergs written by Katya Adaui and has been published by RANDOM HOUSE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-03 with Literary Criticism categories.

"La exigencia de hacer algo para ser alguien. Estamos hartos de los gritos. No hay silencio. Hartos de dispararles a los mismos tipos en la computadora, hartos de las ráfagas infinitas, de quedarnos sin vidas ni municiones, del todos contra todos. A veces leer metranquiliza.

Two friends, Walter Dunmore and Al Clark, are the only members of their bomber crew to survive an airforce plane crash in World War II Canada. But they must struggle with the sub-zero wilderness of Newfoundland's Labrador coast until help arrives. Meanwhile, on the homefront, in a small farming community, Walt's wife Dottie struggles with her own battles: loneliness, anxiety and her attraction to an itinerant farm worker. Only one man comes home alive from Labrador, but the lives of their two families remain forever entwined. Years later, in Chicago where they've all moved, questions of loyalty and bravery ensnare their children. And as they confront the horrors of Vietnam one of them will be left to choose between revenge or sacrifice. The novel follows the characters into old age, when decades-old secrets are laid bare to redeem the present and illuminate the past. Rebecca Johns explores with remarkable grace and intimacy themes of love and infidelity, bravery and cowardice, domesticity and marriage.
