English summary: In the wake of the Enlightenment, the "theology of the New Testament" became a historically oriented literary genre. The appreciation for the study history and the development of the anthropocentric worldview that became established in the 18th century still shape axiomatic attempts to define a "theology of the New Testament" today. With the triumph of the history paradigm, efforts to develop an appropriate form of theological analysis have not kept pace. Paul-Gerhard Klumbies advocates giving voice to the reference to God contained in the theology of the New Testament. By focusing on its theological proprium, the "theology of the New Testament" is able to take on its share of the theology's overall theological responsibility. At the same time it supports the fact that theology as a science can make its own contribution to epistemological discourse with non-theological disciplines. German description: Im Zuge der Aufklarung hat sich die "Theologie des Neuen Testaments" zu einer historisch ausgerichteten Literaturgattung entwickelt. Die im 18. Jahrhundert begrundete Hochschatzung der Geschichtswissenschaft und die Herausbildung der anthropozentrischen Weltsicht pragen bis in die Gegenwart hinein die Axiomatik der Entwurfe einer "Theologie des Neuen Testaments". Mit dem Siegeszug des historischen Paradigmas hat die Bemuhung um eine adaquate theologische Ausarbeitung nicht Schritt gehalten. Paul-Gerhard Klumbies pladiert dafur, den Gottesbezug als Horizont der Theologie des Neuen Testaments zur Sprache zu bringen. Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State

The contribution of the Johannine literature to the development of Christian theology, and particularly to Christology, is uncontested, although careful distinction between the implications of its language, especially that of sonship, in a first century 'Jewish' context and in the subsequent theological controversies of the early Church has been particularly important if not always easily sustained. Recent study has shaken off the weight of subsequent Christian appropriation of Johannine language which has sometimes made readers immune to the ambiguities and challenging tensions in its thought. The Oxford Handbook of Johannine Studies begins with chapters concentrating on discussions of the background and context of the Johannine literature, leading to the different ways of reading the text, and thence to the primary theological themes within them, before concluding with some discussion of the reception of the Johannine literature in the early church. Inevitably, given their different genres and levels of complexity, some chapters pay most if not all attention to the Gospel, whereas others are more able to give a more substantial place to the letters. All the contributors have themselves made significant contributions to their topic. They have sought to give a balanced introduction to the relevant scholarship and debate, but they have also been able to present the issues from their own perspective. The Handbook will help those less familiar with the Johannine literature to get a sense of the major areas of debate and why the field continues to be one of vibrant and exciting study, and that those who are already part of the conversation will find new insights to enliven their own on-going engagement with these writings.

Im Schlussteil wird dann das Neue Testament als Ganzes in Blick genommen. Inhaltlich zeigt sich bei den verschiedenen Themen eine große Vielfalt, aber auch eine weitreichende Übereinstimmung in den Grundfragen von Glauben und Leben: Gott hat in Jesus Christus Heil für eine Welt geschaffen, die sonst verloren wäre. Weil dieses Heil aber in der erneuerten Gemeinschaft mit Gott besteht, werden die Menschen nach ihrer Antwort auf Gottes Zusage gefragt. Ziel ist ein Leben in der Liebe zu Gott und zum Nächsten. Diese Botschaft passt nicht in allem zu den Erwartungen, die wir an ein Wort für unsere Zeit haben. Und doch bleibt sie höchst aktuell auch für uns.
