The important Vienna Actionist Hermann Nitsch once said, ""Red is the color that people register the most because it is simultaneously the color of life and death."" Originally inspired by French Tachisme and American Abstract Expressionism, Nitsch began working with paint in the late 1950s and early 60s, putting on ""theatrical painting actions"" in order to produce large-scale spill paintings. Up until the very early 1960s, his canvases were often still stained with evocative rivers of red paint; over the ensuing years, he would gradually replace paint with blood and stretched canvases with unstretched bed sheets, bringing an assortment of new and highly charged ""materials"" into his practice, including internal organs, animal cadavers and human bodies. From the 1960s until the late 1990s, Nitsch staged nearly 100 ritualistic performance actions in his Theater of Orgies and Mysteries series. Through the complete set of these often incendiary actions, which included live slaughters, dance, music and other pagan gestures, Nitsch realized his concept for a total work of art that brings together painting, architecture and music with the catharsis of self-recognition.

Konzentration" ist das Leitwort, an dem sich der Aufbau dieser einmaligen Werkschau orientiert. Nach ihrer Entstehung in den sechziger Jahren bisher kaum gezeigte Wachs- und Bindenbilder repräsentieren die Essenz des jungen, sich im Aufbruch befindenden Künstlers Hermann Nitsch am Rande seiner "Sturm und Drang" Zeit. Die Mitte, der "Meridian" der Ausstellung, wird gehalten von einer bisher verschollenen lebensgroßen "Heldenzeichnung" von Hermann Nitsch, sinnstiftend: Oedipus Christus. Hermann Nitsch produced his first "poured" paintings around 1960. In this form of action painting, the artist is primarily concerned with the substance of the paint, which he investigates from one painting action to the next. This catalog illustrates the development of his painterly works from the early 1960s to the present day. The main focus of the content lies in the characteristics of the various work cycles. In addition to the first "splatter" paintings it shows floor "splatter" paintings from the Red Cycle (1995), works from the Six-Day Play (1989) or the yellow Resurrection Cycle (2002). While one colour dominates in the monochrome works, in others a real explosion of colours takes place. The paint is splattered or sprayed; it may be applied in liquid form or impasto. The artist may use a paintbrush or smear the paint with his hands. The focal point is the exploration of the state of the paint, which varies between liquid and solid.

Die private Kunstsammlung beinhaltet eine sehr stringente Nitsch Kollektion mit mehr als einhundert Werken und wird im Hermann Nitsch Museum Mistelbach 2010 erstmals der Öffentlichkeit in ihrer Gesamtheit gezeigt. In den Hauptwerken aus der Duerckheim Collection lässt sich entdecken, wie Nitsch den Wechsel von der Farbe Rot zu einem erneuerten, breiten Farbspektrum vollzieht. Er bereitete eine Philosophie der Farbe, eine eigene Farblehre vor, die auch in die Theorie des Orgien Mysterien Theaters einfloss. Neue Sinneseindrücke haben seine Aufmerksamkeit auf eine spezielle Form der Farbharmonie gelenkt, die seither für sein höchst individuelles Farbempfinden in Verbindung mit einer fast archaischen Farbsymbolik charakteristisch ist. Hermann Nitsch schlägt damit eine "mythologische", metaphysische Brücke zum tatsächlichen Geschehen des Orgien Mysterien Theaters.
