This study recapitulates basic developments in the tradition of hermeneutic and phenomenological studies of science. It focuses on the ways in which scientific research is committed to the universe of interpretative phenomena. It treats scientific research by addressing its characteristic hermeneutic situations, and uses the following basic argument in this treatment: By demonstrating that science’s epistemological identity is not to be spelled out in terms of objectivism, mathematical essentialism, representationalism, and foundationalism, one undermines scientism without succumbing scientific research to “procedures of normative-democratic control” that threaten science’s cognitive autonomy. The study shows that in contrast to social constructivism, hermeneutic phenomenology of scientific research makes the case that overcoming scientism does not imply restrictive policies regarding the constitution of scientific objects.

Traditional sources of morality—philosophical ethics, religious standards, and cultural values—are being questioned at a time when we most need morality’s direction. Research shows that though moral direction is vital to our identities, happiness, productivity and relationships, there is a decline in its development and use, especially among younger adults. This book argues that hermeneutic moral realism is the best hope for meeting the twenty-first century challenges of scientism, individualism, and postmodernism. In addition to providing a thorough understanding of moral realism, the volume also takes preliminary steps toward its application in important practical settings, including research, psychotherapy, politics, and publishing.

The demise of empiricist philosophies of science has contributed to the current disarray of philosophy in the social sciences. This book argues that a realist analysis of the structures and processes which make up the social world can provide a way out of its present impasse. These processes, ranging from the interpersonal negotiation of meaning to the constraining influence of administrative or market structures, cannot be understood as mere constructs either in the minds of the theorist or of the social factors themselves, since they actually generate the social world as we know it. The author develops some implications of this approach and presents a realist view of some of the principal theoretical traditions and controversies within sociology and other social sciences.

The Art Of Gerhard Richter written by Christian Lotz and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-22 with Philosophy categories.

The Art of Gerhard Richter: Hermeneutics, Images, Meaning presents the first philosophical investigation of, arguably, one of the most popular and important painters working today, Gerhard Richter. From monochrome painting and photo realism to conceptual art and gesture-expressive painting, Richter has transformed the spectrum of 20th-Century painting. Building upon Gadamer's notion of 'formed images', the book outlines elements of a hermeneutics and a phenomenology of images and paintings. Moreover, the hermeneutic approach to art is combined with the crucial question of how paintings and photographs are related to each other for Richter. The author suggests that paintings "open up†? the fixed relation and intentionality of photographs by idealizing and essentializing the content of the photographs. By relying upon a hermeneutical and phenomenological approach, rather than working from abstract theory, The Art of Gerhard Richter provides philosophical insights developed out of Richter's works of art. Uncovering key philosophical aspects of Richter's work, the author's reflections discuss the relation between appearance and essence, the role of faith and hope, the dialectic of distance and nearness, the issues of death and terror, and the role of beauty and landscapes in Richter's paintings.

Unquiet Understanding written by Nicholas Davey and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-01 with Philosophy categories.

In Unquiet Understanding, Nicholas Davey reappropriates the radical content of Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics to reveal that it offers a powerful critique of Nietzsche's philosophy of language, nihilism, and post-structuralist deconstructions of meaning. By critically engaging with the practical and ethical implications of philosophical hermeneutics, Davey asserts that the importance of philosophical hermeneutics resides in a formidable double claim that strikes at the heart of both traditional philosophy and deconstruction. He shows that to seek control over the fluid nature of linguistic meaning with rigid conceptual regimes or to despair of such fluidity because it frustrates hope for stable meaning is to succumb to nihilism. Both are indicative of a failure to appreciate that understanding depends upon the vital instability of the "word." This innovative book demonstrates that Gadamer's thought merits a radical reappraisal and that it is more provocative than commonly supposed.

Beyond Supernatural Realism written by Robert High Baker PhD and has been published by Archway Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-19 with Philosophy categories.

For almost two millennia, Christians have struggled with the confusing language of the Nicene Creed and its strange intermingling of Greek and biblical traditions. And for the past several centuries, at the least, Christians have also wrestled with another challenge: the insistence in orthodox Christian doctrine that their faith depends on a belief in a supernatural realism that places God, truth, and ultimate reality itself somewhere other than in the natural, human world. In Beyond Supernatural Realism, author Dr. Robert High Baker explores how these ideas about supernatural realism asserted in the Nicene Creed came to be, and he argues for another way to understand the meaning of Jesuss life and death through the lens of existentialist philosophy and philosophers like Heidegger and Kierkegaard. Existentialist thought gives us an alternative way to understand what we mean by God, the nature of faith, and the power of Christ, and it unburdens contemporary Christians from the limitations of antiquated cultural traditions. For modern-day individuals, supernatural reality has no meaning for them in their day-to-day lives, yet these individuals are asked to accept such a reality as the basis for their faith. But by turning to existentialist thought as a way to leave behind concepts that no longer make sense in the modern world, we can instead discover what being a Christian might truly mean.

New Perspectives On Realism written by Luca Taddio and has been published by Mimesis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Philosophy categories.

With this volume, we present a collection of writings, each offering their own novel perspective regarding the question of realism. Realism has undoubtedly attracted a lot of attention during recent philosophical debates, and one of its characteristic aspects that has made the most notable impact is the way it challenges rigid traditional demarcations between "continental" and "analytic" philosophy. We maintain that there is still much more to be said on the matter and that a renewal of the discussion on realism is necessary and should bypass old divisions. Therefore, this volume offers a contribution to some of the many discussions on the subject without entirely departing from the "old" realism and without treating its object of study as something that can be created ex nihilo. Instead, this work is based on the broadly shared conviction that a certain historicism cannot be left out of the picture if we are to reposition realism and see its present or future as yet to be determined rather than set in stone.
