Born into a Navy family, Bill Cushing was named in honor of the Civil War Naval hero depicted in this book. He lived in several states, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico before moving to California where he now resides with his wife and son. As an undergrad, he was called the "blue collar" writer by peers at the University of Central Florida because of his own years serving in the Navy and later working as an electrician on oil tankers, naval vessels, and fishing boats before returning to college at the age of 37. He went on to earn an MFA in writing from Goddard College in Vermont. For over 20 years, he taught at East Los Angeles and Mt. San Antonio colleges. Recently retired, Bill continues teaching part-time and facilitates a writing workshop for 9 Bridges, a nationwide non-profit community for writers. He has two other books from Southern Arizona Press: Just a Little Cage of Bone (collected poems) and Time Well Spent (personal non-fiction narratives). The American Civil War is one of the most well-known historical events in human history. It has been studied, replayed and written about so many times that it seemed futile to write another book about it; especially a book of poetry. But its story has yet to be presented in this form. Each of the fifteen chapters in this book is displayed in the format of heroic crowns of sonnets. A heroic crown of sonnets is a specific style of poetry consisting of a collection or series of fourteen sonnets interlocked by the last line of each becoming the first line of the sonnet that immediately follows, with the fifteenth sonnet being comprised by the last line of each of the other fourteen. This book is the collection of fourteen heroic crowns linked together with the final, or fifteenth, being comprised of the last sonnet of each of the fourteen to become a heroic crown of master sonnets. The poetic style requires the author to be precise in meter and syllable count. This book is not meant to be a detailed history of the Civil War but rather a poetic adventure describing a country at war with itself. It is a statement about how a new Nation dealt with its inner demons concerning slavery and how the conflict and the times divided the Union and its families.

Years of painstaking research have uncovered more detail on Thomas Ward Custer, the younger brother of the legendary General George Custer. Historians are now coming to understand the full influence of Tom Custer on his brother and American life, from his heroic exploits during the Civil War to his legendary bravery during the Indian Wars, where he served under his brother as his aide-de-camp. Had Tom not been overshadowed by his more famous brother, he might well have become one of the more notable characters and military officers of the American West. Despite winning two Congressional Medals of Honor, his legendary feud with Rain-in-the-Face, the shooting scrape with “Wild Bill” Hickok, and many other fearsome exploits, Tom has taken a backseat to George in the American imagination. Only recently has his influence on the history of the United States become fully understood and appreciated by scholars. Author Roy Bird takes us inside the circle of Tom and Autie, whose close-knit relationship and intense rivalry in hunting, military skills, business, and even romance would span from their boyhood farm in Ohio to their heroic end at the Battle of Little Bighorn, where they were, as always, together. Bird’s The Better Brother is not only the story of two brothers whose incredible talents and healthy rivalry drove each other to greatness, but also a story at the center of American history.

On December 7, 1864, just one week after the bloody battle of Franklin, Tennessee, William McGee, a drummer boy from Newark, New Jersey, was credited with leading a Federal force to a decisive victory over the Confederates in a clash just thirty miles from the carnage at Franklin. This 15-year-old Irish-American, on convalescent duty and acting as an orderly to General Lovell Rousseau, was recognized for the capture of two guns, several hundred prisoners, and the saving of Fortress Rosecrans in Murfreesboro from the famed Nathan Bedford Forrest. For his actions, young McGee would soon be awarded a Medal of Honor, written up in newspapers and books as a glorious New Jersey legend, be commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army at age 18, and then, inexplicably at the height of his notoriety, virtually disappear from history for more than 100 years. This is the story of a lost war hero, a man-child with the world at his feet, whose fall from grace is accelerated by fame, lies, alcohol, bigamy, and murder.

The Civil War generation saw its world in ways startlingly different from our own. In these essays, Glenn W. LaFantasie examines the lives and experiences of several key personalities who gained fame during the war and after. The battle of Gettysburg is the thread that ties these Civil War lives together. Gettysburg was a personal turning point, though each person was affected differently. Largely biographical in its approach, the book captures the human drama of the war and shows how this group of individuals—including Abraham Lincoln, James Longstreet, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, William C. Oates, and others—endured or succumbed to the war and, willingly or unwillingly, influenced its outcome. At the same time, it shows how the war shaped the lives of these individuals, putting them through ordeals they never dreamed they would face or survive.
