Women have always been involved in maritime life, but their stories have rarely been told. David Cordingly looks at this traditionally male domain and finds some remarkable women: Mary Patten, who took command of a vessel and sailed it round Cape Horn at the age of nineteen; Grace Darling, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper, who rowed out in ferocious seas to rescue three shipwrecked men; and the awesome Anne Bonny, who disguised herself as a man and became a fearsome pirate before being sentenced to the gallows. From the waterfront prostitutes and the women who went to sea dressed as sailors, to the wives who were left waiting at home, Heroines and Harlots looks at the unique relationship between women and the sea. 'Fascinating, never at a loss for detail' Herald

Rediscover Scottish history through the eyes of its most unique and outspoken women in this volume of entertaining tales from the eighteenth century to the twentieth. Annie Harrower-Gray introduces readers to three centuries of rebellious, innovative, and downright scandalous Scottish women. The whole of society appears, from ordinary laborers, prostitutes and factory hands to their more celebrated sisters and even witches, bodysnatchers, and female Jacobites. The tales of these colorful characters are freshly researched and engagingly told. Step inside the boudoirs of Edinburgh’s ladies of pleasure, whose civilized manners so confused one church minister that he ‘accidentally’ took tea in a brothel. Creep into the graveyard with Helen Torrance and Jean Lapiq, convicted of bodysnatching half a century before Burke and Hare. Uncover the murky history of Scotland’s last witch Helen Duncan, whose eerily accurate wartime predictions led to her imprisonment. This book offers an exciting and erudite voyage through the social history of Scotland.

Each woman in the genealogy of Jesus - Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba and Mary - faced insurmountable odds that would have disqualified her from most jobs in many churches. Yet emotional abuse, prostitution, murder, death, lies, widowhood, poverty and an out of wedlock pregnancy are scars that God redeems and transforms into glory on the pathway to the Incarnation - the birth of our Messiah. Where we might see darkness God reveals His faithful love. He majestically intervened into the lives of these women to ensure that our Messiah would come at precisely the right moment and into the exact family His Father had prepared. What seems to disqualify them from the genealogy of Jesus actually becomes the source of great hope for broken people. Harlots and Heroines: The Midwives of the Messiah is a book about our spiritual mothers. They are waiting for us in heaven and as they wait, they call back, Dear Sons and Daughters, study our lives and you will see that God is sovereign and you can trust Him, too.

Treasure Neverland written by Neil Rennie and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Literary Criticism categories.

Treasure Neverland is about factual and fictional pirates. Swashbuckling eighteenth-century pirates were the ideal pirates of all time and tales of their exploits are still popular today. Most people have heard of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd even though they lived about three hundred years ago, but most have also heard of other pirates, such as Long John Silver and Captain Hook, even though these pirates never lived at all, except in literature. The differences between these two types of pirates - real and imaginary - are not quite as stark as we might think as the real, historical pirates are themselves somewhat legendary, somewhat fictional, belonging on the page and the stage rather than on the high seas. Based on extensive research of fascninating primary material, including testimonials, narratives, legal statements, colonial and mercantile records, Neil Rennie describes the ascertainable facts of real eighteenth-century pirate lives and then investigates how such facts were subsequently transformed artistically, by writers like Defoe and Stevenson, into realistic and fantastic fictions of various kinds: historical novels, popular melodramas, boyish adventures, Hollywood films. Rennie's aim is to watch, in other words, the long dissolve from Captain Kidd to Johnny Depp. There are surprisingly few scholarly studies of the factual pirates - properly analysing the basic manuscript sources and separating those documents from popular legends - and there are even fewer literary-historical studies of the whole crew of fictional pirates, although those imaginary pirates form a distinct and coherent literary tradition. Treasure Neverland is a study of this Scots-American literary tradition and also of the interrelations between the factual and fictional pirates - pirates who are intimately related, as the nineteenth-century writings about fictional pirates began with the eighteenth-century writings about supposedly real pirates. 'What I want is the best book about the Buccaneers', wrote Stevenson when he began Treasure Island in 1881. What he received, rightly, was indeed the best book: the sensational and unreliable History of the Pyrates (1724).
