En el presente libro se abordan tres modelos de analisis para antenas microstrip: modelo de linea de transmision, el modelo de cavidad y el de onda completa con FDTD, implementados en una herramienta computacional sobre Matlab desarrolladas al interior del grupo de Investigacion GITUD de la Universidad Francisco Jose de Caldas en Bogota D.C. (Colombia). En el modelo de linea de transmision la antena microstrip se representa mediante dos ranuras, separadas por una linea de transmision de baja impedancia Zc y de longitud L. El modelo de cavidad permite disenos practicos de antenas microstrip de parche circular para el modo dominante TM(110). El Modelo de Onda Completa considera la antena microstrip compuesta por plano de tierra, parche, linea de alimentacion y material dielectrico como un "todo," rodeada en sus tres medidas espaciales por un arreglo tridimensional de celdas de Yee que interactua con el aire.

El estudio de cualquier antena se centra en las caracteristicas -como geometria, materiales que la constituyen, etcetera-, que influyen en el comportamiento de su diagrama de radiacion. Si se desea encontrar la configuracion fisica de una antena capaz de radiar de modo especifico alrededor del espacio que la rodea, se dice que se esta en un proceso de sintesis. Por contrapartida, si se tiene una configuracion fisica previamente establecida y se realiza el estudio del comportamiento de sus parametros de radiacion, se habla del proceso de analisis de la antena. Ambos procesos facilitan la labor de diseno de un sistema radiante. En particular, la tecnica de sintesis puede aplicarse para encontrar una configuracion que, bajo ciertos cambios en su distribucion de excitacion, pueda generar, alternativamente, varios diagramas de radiacion. Se habla entonces de reconfigurabilidad de la antena. Si se logra implementar un proceso de sintesis, se puede decir que se ha pasado a la etapa de control de la antena. En esta Tesis se desarrollan lineas de investigacion, aplicadas a distintas configuraciones fisicas de antenas, que abarcan estos cuatro procesos: analisis, sintesis, control y diseno."
