Hessenberg And Tridiagonal Matrices written by Gérard Meurant and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-10 with Mathematics categories.

This is the only book devoted exclusively to Hessenberg and tridiagonal matrices. Hessenberg matrices are involved in Krylov methods for solving linear systems or computing eigenvalues and eigenvectors, in the QR algorithm for computing eigenvalues, and in many other areas of scientific computing (for instance, control theory). Matrices that are both upper and lower Hessenberg are tridiagonal. Their entries are zero except for the main diagonal and the subdiagonal and updiagonal next to it. Hessenberg and Tridiagonal Matrices: Theory and Examples presents known and new results; describes the theoretical properties of the matrices, their determinants, LU factorizations, inverses, and eigenvalues; illustrates the theoretical properties with applications and examples as well as numerical experiments; and considers unitary Hessenberg matrices, inverse eigenvalue problems, and Toeplitz tridiagonal matrices. This book is intended for applied mathematicians, especially those interested in numerical linear algebra, and it will also be of interest to physicists and engineers.

A significantly revised and improved introduction to a critical aspect of scientific computation Matrix computations lie at the heart of most scientific computational tasks. For any scientist or engineer doing large-scale simulations, an understanding of the topic is essential. Fundamentals of Matrix Computations, Second Edition explains matrix computations and the accompanying theory clearly and in detail, along with useful insights. This Second Edition of a popular text has now been revised and improved to appeal to the needs of practicing scientists and graduate and advanced undergraduate students. New to this edition is the use of MATLAB for many of the exercises and examples, although the Fortran exercises in the First Edition have been kept for those who want to use them. This new edition includes: * Numerous examples and exercises on applications including electrical circuits, elasticity (mass-spring systems), and simple partial differential equations * Early introduction of the singular value decomposition * A new chapter on iterative methods, including the powerful preconditioned conjugate-gradient method for solving symmetric, positive definite systems * An introduction to new methods for solving large, sparse eigenvalue problems including the popular implicitly-restarted Arnoldi and Jacobi-Davidson methods With in-depth discussions of such other topics as modern componentwise error analysis, reorthogonalization, and rank-one updates of the QR decomposition, Fundamentals of Matrix Computations, Second Edition will prove to be a versatile companion to novice and practicing mathematicians who seek mastery of matrix computation.

Matrix Computations And Semiseparable Matrices written by Raf Vandebril and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-15 with Mathematics categories.

The general properties and mathematical structures of semiseparable matrices were presented in volume 1 of Matrix Computations and Semiseparable Matrices. In volume 2, Raf Vandebril, Marc Van Barel, and Nicola Mastronardi discuss the theory of structured eigenvalue and singular value computations for semiseparable matrices. These matrices have hidden properties that allow the development of efficient methods and algorithms to accurately compute the matrix eigenvalues. This thorough analysis of semiseparable matrices explains their theoretical underpinnings and contains a wealth of information on implementing them in practice. Many of the routines featured are coded in Matlab and can be downloaded from the Web for further exploration.

Matrix Analysis written by Roger A. Horn and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-02-23 with Mathematics categories.

In this book the authors present classical and recent results for matrix analysis that have proved to be important to applied mathematics. Facts about matrices, beyond those found in an elementary linear algebra course, are needed to understand virtually any area of mathematics, and the necessary material has only occurred sporadically in the literature and university curricula. As the interest in applied mathematics has grown, the need for a text and a reference work offering a broad selection of topics has become apparent, and this book aims to meet that need. This book will be welcomed as an undergraduate or graduate textbook for students studying matrix analysis. The authors assume a background in elementary linear algebra and knowledge of rudimentary analytical concepts. They begin with a review and discussion of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The following chapters each treat a major topic in depth. This volume should be useful not only as a text, but also as a self-contained reference work to a variety of audiences in other scientific fields.

Linear Algebra And Matrices written by Helene Shapiro and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-08 with Mathematics categories.

Linear algebra and matrix theory are fundamental tools for almost every area of mathematics, both pure and applied. This book combines coverage of core topics with an introduction to some areas in which linear algebra plays a key role, for example, block designs, directed graphs, error correcting codes, and linear dynamical systems. Notable features include a discussion of the Weyr characteristic and Weyr canonical forms, and their relationship to the better-known Jordan canonical form; the use of block cyclic matrices and directed graphs to prove Frobenius's theorem on the structure of the eigenvalues of a nonnegative, irreducible matrix; and the inclusion of such combinatorial topics as BIBDs, Hadamard matrices, and strongly regular graphs. Also included are McCoy's theorem about matrices with property P, the Bruck-Ryser-Chowla theorem on the existence of block designs, and an introduction to Markov chains. This book is intended for those who are familiar with the linear algebra covered in a typical first course and are interested in learning more advanced results.

The Schur Complement And Its Applications written by Fuzhen Zhang and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-03-30 with Mathematics categories.

What's in a name? To paraphrase Shakespeare's Juliet, that which - ilie Haynsworth called the Schur complement, by any other name would be just as beautiful. Nevertheless, her 1968 naming decision in honor of Issai Schur (1875-1941) has gained lasting acceptance by the mathematical com munity. The Schur complement plays an important role in matrix analysis, statistics, numerical analysis, and many other areas of mathematics and its applications. Our goal is to expose the Schur complement as a rich and basic tool in mathematical research and applications and to discuss many significant re sults that illustrate its power and fertility. Although our book was originally conceived as a research reference, it will also be useful for graduate and up per division undergraduate courses in mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics. The contributing authors have developed an exposition that makes the material accessible to readers with a sound foundation in linear algebra. The eight chapters of the book (Chapters 0-7) cover themes and varia tions on the Schur complement, including its historical development, basic properties, eigenvalue and singular value inequalities, matrix inequalities in both finite and infinite dimensional settings, closure properties, and appli cations in statistics, probability, and numerical analysis. The chapters need not be read in the order presented, and the reader should feel at leisure to browse freely through topics of interest.

Matrix Algorithms written by G. W. Stewart and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-08-01 with Mathematics categories.

This volume is the first in a self-contained five-volume series devoted to matrix algorithms. It focuses on the computation of matrix decompositions--that is, the factorization of matrices into products of similar ones. The first two chapters provide the required background from mathematics and computer science needed to work effectively in matrix computations. The remaining chapters are devoted to the LU and QR decompositions--their computation and applications. The singular value decomposition is also treated, although algorithms for its computation will appear in the second volume of the series. The present volume contains 65 algorithms formally presented in pseudocode. Other volumes in the series will treat eigensystems, iterative methods, sparse matrices, and structured problems. The series is aimed at the nonspecialist who needs more than black-box proficiency with matrix computations. To give the series focus, the emphasis is on algorithms, their derivation, and their analysis. The reader is assumed to have a knowledge of elementary analysis and linear algebra and a reasonable amount of programming experience, typically that of the beginning graduate engineer or the undergraduate in an honors program. Strictly speaking, the individual volumes are not textbooks, although they are intended to teach, the guiding principle being that if something is worth explaining, it is worth explaining fully. This has necessarily restricted the scope of the series, but the selection of topics should give the reader a sound basis for further study.

"In truth, it is not knowledge, but learning, not possessing, but production, not being there, but travelling there, which provides the greatest pleasure. When I have completely understood something, then I turn away and move on into the dark; indeed, so curious is the insatiable man, that when he has completed one house, rather than living in it peacefully, he starts to build another. " Letter from C. F. Gauss to W. Bolyai on Sept. 2, 1808 This textbook adds a book devoted to applied mathematics to the series "Grundwissen Mathematik. " Our goals, like those of the other books in the series, are to explain connections and common viewpoints between various mathematical areas, to emphasize the motivation for studying certain prob lem areas, and to present the historical development of our subject. Our aim in this book is to discuss some of the central problems which arise in applications of mathematics, to develop constructive methods for the numerical solution of these problems, and to study the associated questions of accuracy. In doing so, we also present some theoretical results needed for our development, especially when they involve material which is beyond the scope of the usual beginning courses in calculus and linear algebra. This book is based on lectures given over many years at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich, Berlin and Augsburg.
