Met deze uitgave van het Wiesbadense handschrift – de eerste kritische editie in de reeks "Middeleeuwse Verzamelhandschriften uit de Nederlanden" – wordt een even unieke als onbekende collectie Middelnederlandse geestelijke literatuur in proza en op rijm ontsloten. De omvangrijke codex in folio werd rond 1410 in een Vlaams-Brabants grensgebied vervaardigd. De kopiisten en samenstellers vormden vermoedelijk een groep van stedelijke leken die zich toelegden op een oprecht religieus leven. De teksten getuigen van drie belangstellingssferen: catechetische instructie, apocalyptiek en lekenspiritualiteit. Wat opvalt, is de kritische stellingname tegenover de seculiere geestelijkheid. Zeer bijzonder is het feit dat het handschrift pre-Eyckiaanse tekeningen bevat. De meeste zijn op losse bladen gelijmd, die al bij de samenstelling her en der in de codex werden ingevoegd. Christine de Pizan (1364-c.1430) composed 'Le Livre de la Cité des Dames' as a response to the misogynistic writings of the time. In 1475, Jan de Baenst, a descendant of a Bruges family, ordered a translation, 'Het Bouc van de Stede der Vrauwen'.
