Met deze uitgave van het Wiesbadense handschrift – de eerste kritische editie in de reeks "Middeleeuwse Verzamelhandschriften uit de Nederlanden" – wordt een even unieke als onbekende collectie Middelnederlandse geestelijke literatuur in proza en op rijm ontsloten. De omvangrijke codex in folio werd rond 1410 in een Vlaams-Brabants grensgebied vervaardigd. De kopiisten en samenstellers vormden vermoedelijk een groep van stedelijke leken die zich toelegden op een oprecht religieus leven. De teksten getuigen van drie belangstellingssferen: catechetische instructie, apocalyptiek en lekenspiritualiteit. Wat opvalt, is de kritische stellingname tegenover de seculiere geestelijkheid. Zeer bijzonder is het feit dat het handschrift pre-Eyckiaanse tekeningen bevat. De meeste zijn op losse bladen gelijmd, die al bij de samenstelling her en der in de codex werden ingevoegd. Customised Books in Early Modern Europe and the Americas, 1400‒1700 examines the form, function, and meaning of alterations made by users to the physical structure of their book, through insertion or interpolation, subtraction or deletion, adjustments in the ordering of folios or quires, amendments of image or text. The Southern Low Countries were among Europe’s core regions for the repression of sodomy during the late medieval period. As the first comprehensive study on sodomy in the Southern Low Countries, this book charts the prosecution of sodomy in some of the region’s leading cities, such as Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp, from 1400 to 1700 and explains the reasons behind local differences and variations in the intensity of prosecution over time. Through a critical examination of a range of sources, this study also considers how the urban fabric perceived sodomy and provides a broader interpretive framework for its meaning within the local culture.

The essays in this volume are concerned with early printed narrative texts in Western Europe. The aim of this book is to consider to what extent the shift from hand-written to printed books left its mark on narrative literature in a number of vernacular languages. Did the advent of printing bring about changes in the corpus of narrative texts when compared with the corpus extant in manuscript copies? Did narrative texts that already existed in manuscript form undergo significant modifications when they began to be printed? How did this crucial media development affect the nature of these narratives? Which strategies did early printers develop to make their texts commercially attractive? Which social classes were the target audiences for their editions? Around half of the articles focus on developments in the history of early printed narrative texts, others discuss publication strategies. This book provides an impetus for cross-linguistic research. It invites scholars from various disciplines to get involved in an international conversation about fifteenth- and sixteenth-century narrative literature.
