Een staalkaart van de Nederlands-Indische samenleving aan de hand van unieke documenten: portretten uit de interneringskampen. Deze portretten zijn van de hand van Elisabeth (Bep) Rietveld (1913-1999), kunstschilder, de dochter van Gerrit Rietveld, en leerling van Charley Toorop. Na een stukgelopen huwelijk vertrok zij in 1938 naar Batavia om een nieuw leven te beginnen. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog verbleef Bep met haar kinderen in verschillende Japanse interneringskampen. Onder barre omstandigheden maakte ze tientallen portretten van haar medegeïnterneerden, voor het overgrote deel jonge kinderen. Het tekenen hield haar overeind. Op basis van archiefonderzoek, egodocumenten en interviews tekent historica Erika Prins de verhalen achter al deze portretten op. Hoe waren deze families in Nederlands-Indië terechtgekomen? Hoe verdienden ze de kost? Hoe verging het hun tijdens de oorlog, en daarna? Prins plaatst deze verschillende levensgeschiedenissen, inclusief die van Rietveld zelf, in hun historische context. Het resultaat is een caleidoscopisch verhaal over een unieke periode in de koloniale geschiedenis.

In het Indisch Lexicon zijn bijna 19.000 Indische woorden en begrippen, zoals ze in de Nederlandse taal vanaf ongeveer 1600 gebruikt zijn, vastgelegd, omschreven en in hun context geplaatst.
