In 1980 wordt in Jeruzalem een graftombe gevonden met beenderenkistjes uit de eerste eeuw van onze jaartelling. Het graf blijkt geheel intact en van de inscripties die zes van de tien kistjes dragen wordt vastgesteld dat ze authentiek zijn. Pas 15 jaar later bemerken programmamakers van de BBC bij toeval dat de namen in de inscripties een wonderlijke combinatie vormen. 'Jezus zoon van Jozef', 'Maria', 'Mariamme de lerares', 'Jozef', 'Mattheus' en 'Judas zoon van Jezus'. Deze ontdekking haalt in 1996 de pers, maar daarna wordt het weer stil. De recente ontdekking van een ander beenderenkistje stimuleert verder onderzoek naar het familiegraf. Discovery Channel zendt een documentaire van James Cameron uit over de vondst, maar de theologische wereld blijkt sceptisch. De gevonden namen waren in de tijd van Jezus zeer gebruikelijk. Aan de unieke combinatie wordt voorbijgegaan. Wat kan men anders? De gedachte overwegen dat Jezus niet in het lichaam opgestaan is? Dat Jezus getrouwd was met Mariamme (Magdalena) en dat ze samen een kind hadden? Inmiddels heeft DNA-onderzoek plaatsgevonden, hebben wiskundigen een kansberekening gemaakt en wordt uit steeds meer details duidelijk dat naar alle waarschijnlijkheid na tweeduizend jaar het graf van Jezus en zijn naaste familie teruggevonden is.
