Jim, een herbergierszoon, krijgt een schatkaart in handen. Een schip wordt uitgerust en Jim gaat mee: op zoek naar de schat. Helaas blijkt de bemanning gedeeltelijk uit piraten te bestaan, die onder leiding van de eenbenige scheepskok, Long John Silver, die schat willen buit maken. Muiterij, wapengeweld, malaria en goudkoorts zorgen vervolgens voor heel wat slachtoffers, spanning en sensatie. Jorge Luis Borges, een groot bewonderaar van Stevenson, noemde Silver ooit het eerste 'complexe karakter' in de Engelse literatuur: hij is weliswaar een schurk, maar heeft toch ook heel goede kanten. Het is onmogelijk geen sympathie te voelen voor deze geslepen moordenaar. In feiten krijgen we een voorproefje van het in 1886 geschreven The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll en Mr. Hyde over de beroemde Homo duplex, met zijn respectabele én zijn verborgen gewelddadige kant. Juist deze dubbelheid maakt Schateiland, behalve meeslepend, zo fascinerend. Stevenson schreef dit avonturenboek oorspronkelijk voor zijn stiefzoontje. Toen het in 1883 verscheen als roman voor volwassenen werd het een geweldig succes en het is altijd populair gebleven. Deze uitgave is niet de zoveelste bewerking voor de jeugd, maar een volwaardige literaire vertaling, die recht doet aan meer dan het verhaal alleen.
