Do You Feel It Too? explores a new sense of self that is becoming manifest in experimental fiction written by a generation of authors who can be considered the 'heirs' of the postmodern tradition. It offers a precise, in-depth analysis of a new, post-postmodern direction in fiction writing, and highlights which aspects are most acute in the post-postmodern novel. Most notable is the emphatic expression of feelings and sentiments and a drive toward inter-subjective connection and communication. The self that is presented in these post-postmodern works of fiction can best be characterized asrelational. To analyze this new sense of self, a new interpretational method is introduced that offers a sophisticated approach to fictional selves combining the insights of post-classical narratology and what is called 'narrative psychology'.Close analyses of three contemporary experimental texts – Infinite Jest (1996) by David Foster Wallace,A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000) by Dave Eggers, and House of Leaves(2000) by Mark Danielewski – provide insight into the typical problems that the self experiences in postmodern cultural contexts. Three such problems or 'symptoms' are singled out and analyzed in depth: an inability to choose because of a lack of decision-making tools; a difficulty to situate or appropriate feelings; and a structural need for a 'we' (a desire for connectivity and sociality).The critique that can be distilled from these texts, especially on the perceivedsolipsistic quality of postmodern experience worlds, runs parallel to developments in recent critical theory. Ruim tachtig jaar geleden en precies midden in het interbellum verscheen een van Freuds meest gelezen essays: Het onbehagen in de cultuur (1929/1930). De boodschap is nogal pessimistisch: ‘Het oogmerk dat de mens ‘gelukkig’ is, komt in het plan van de ‘schepping’ niet voor.’ Freud beklemtoont herhaaldelijk het transhistorisch karakter van dit onbehagen. Het is toe te schrijven aan onbewuste schuldgevoelens als onvermijdelijk nevenproduct van de cultuur. De menselijke conditie heeft onvermijdelijk te lijden onder de tegenstelling tussen beschaving en seksualiteit. Bovendien zijn er onderliggende en interne spanningsverhoudingen tussen libido en zelfbehoud, lustprincipe en realiteitsprincipe, liefde en destructie, Eros en Thanatos. De prijs die we voor onze cultuur betalen is het verlies van geluk dat het gevolg is van (onbewust) schuldgevoel. Een tragische visie op de menselijke conditie is en blijft tot vandaag kenmerkend voor de psychoanalytische visie. Een categoraal onderscheid tussen normaal en abnormaal bestaat niet, psychopathologie is voornamelijk te begrijpen als de uitvergroting van algemeen menselijke problemen, de mens is innerlijk verdeeld en leeft in een niet op te heffen disharmonie met zichzelf en met de natuur. In dit boek komen verschillende (cultuur)filosofische en psychoanalytische stemmen aan het woord die Freuds tekst tegen het licht houden van de actuele psychoanalyse en de hedendaagse cultuur. Versnellingsstress, globalisering, consumptiekapitalisme, postmodernisme, neoliberalisme en meritocratie, de cultus van de zelfonthulling, virtuele realiteit, simulatie en cyborgatie zijn slechts enkele van de huidige gegevens. Wat valt er dientengevolge over het nieuwe onbehagen te zeggen? Neemt het ten gevolge van gewijzigde culturele omstandigheden en gevoeligheden andere gedaanten aan? In ice hockey, the term body check refers to a specific move to gain control. It is a blow from body to body, a dynamic clash of physical strength, which will determine the course of the game. In this book, too, the body is checked and there is physical confrontation. Not in the hockey ring, but on stage. This book deals with the body in contemporary (performing) arts. The focus is on exploring theoretical avenues and developing new concepts to grasp corporeal images more accurately. This theoretical research is confronted with the voice of artists whose work explicitly deals with the body. In-depth interviews with a.o. Meg Stuart, Wim Vandekeybus, Romeo Castellucci, Jerôme Bel reveal a very broad range of views on the (re)presentation of the body in today’s performing arts. Samen met de levensgeschiedenis en haar min of meer traumatische ervaringen drukt deze seksualiteit op ons bestaan haar stempel. Drift, libido, lust, genieten of jouissance spelen echter niet alleen in ons liefdesleven een sleutelrol. We zijn ook maar niet alleen dieren met alle gelijkenissen en verschillen. Voor de mens heeft het seksuele onvermijdelijk iets traumatisch. Het bestookt en ontwricht ons van binnen uit. We worden er bovendien op vaak enigmatische wijze mee geconfronteerd. Zeker is de psychoanalyse niet in het minst een seksuologie. Het verwijt van panseksualisme aan Freuds adres is terecht. Seks is dan welteverstaan niet alles, maar seks is wel in alles. De zogenaamde seksuele revolutie heeft ons bij nader toezien amper uit onze seksuele ketenen bevrijd. Onze libido is nu eens een zegen, dan weer een gesel. Het belang van seksualiteit dreigt tegenwoordig ook binnen de psychoanalyse te worden verdrongen. Het is dus de hoogste tijd voor hedendaagse stemmen, een prima thema dus voor reeds het 20ste boek in de reeks Psychoanalytisch Actueel.
