Overhangende luifels, uithangborden, uitstallingen op de stoep en sobere interieurs waren ooit typerend voor de winkels in Amsterdam. Vanaf het midden van de zestiende eeuw hebben de puien, etalages en interieurs van de winkels echter grote veranderingen ondergaan. Clé Lesger beschrijft deze in samenhang met ontwikkelingen in bouwkunde en architectuur, de opkomst van warenhuizen en supermarkten en veranderingen in verlichting en glasfabricage. Ook de samenstelling, koopkracht en smaak van het winkelend publiek spelen een rol. De vele afbeeldingen maken de veranderingen zichtbaar. Daarnaast besteedt Lesger veel aandacht aan de locatie van winkels. Winkels zijn niet willekeurig verdeeld over de stad, maar verbonden met de structuur van het stratennetwerk die is ontstaan tijdens stadsuitbreidingen en andere grote ingrepen in het stedelijk landschap. Pas toen er winkelcentra werden gebouwd in buitenwijken, werd het patroon van winkelstraten doorbroken. In de vooroorlogse delen van Amsterdam is het oude bewinkelingspatroon wel blijven bestaan.

In this study, the appearance and location of shops in Amsterdam during the early modern period is linked to major changes in the urban economy, the size and socio-spatial distribution of its population, and the structure of the urban grid. Not only is there ample attention for the spatial distribution of shops across the urban landscape, but for the first time it is also accurately charted what the exterior and interior of Amsterdam shops looked like and how they changed in the course of the centuries. Partly as a result of this, it has proved possible to give an impression of the ways in which retailers and customers interacted. Sport and Entrepreneurship combines perspectives derived from business history and sports history, focusing on the important but relatively unexplored relationship of entrepreneurship and sport. This interdisciplinary book brings together eleven original contributions by scholars in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, America and Japan which represent innovative and important research on the relationship between cities and their hinterlands. They discuss the factors which determined the changing nature of port-hinterland relations in particular, and highlight the ways in which port-cities have interacted and intersected with their different hinterlands as a result of both in- and out-migration, cultural exchange and the wider flow of goods, services and information. Historically, maritime commerce was a powerful driving force behind urbanisation and by 1850 seaports accounted for a significant proportion of the world’s great cities. Ports acted as nodal points for the flow of population and the dissemination of goods and services, but their role as growth poles also affected the economic transformation of both their hinterlands and forelands. In fact, most ports, irrespective of their size, had a series of overlapping hinterlands whose shifting importance reflected changes in trading relations (political frameworks), migration patterns, family networks and cultural exchange. Urban historians have been criticised for being concerned primarily with self-contained processes which operate within the boundaries of individual towns and cities and as a result, the key relationships between cities and their hinterlands have often been neglected. The chapters in this work focus primarily on the determinants of port-hinterland linkages and analyse these as distinct, but interrelated, fields of interaction. Marking a significant contribution to the literature in this field, Port-Cities and their Hinterlands provides essential reading for students and scholars of the history of economics.
