Blacks in the Dutch World examines the interaction between Black history and Dutch history to gain an understanding of the historical development of racial attitudes. Allison Blakely reveals cracks in the self-image and reputation of Dutch society as a haven for those escaping intolerance. Pervasive images of "the Moor" and "the noble savage" in Dutch art and popular culture; "Black Pete," servant to Santa Claus in Dutch Christmas tradition: these and many other cultural artifacts reflect the racial stereotyping of Blacks that existed in the Dutch world through slavery, servitude, and freedom. Blakely weighs the proposition that factors unique to the modern period have contributed to the creation of this racial imagery in Dutch folklore, art, literature, and religion. By viewing evolving images of Blacks against the backdrop of Western expansion, the agricultural, scientific, and industrial revolutions, and the advent of modern secular doctrines, Blakely discovers that humanism and liberalism, hallmarks of Dutch society since medieval times, have been imperfect against race bias. Blacks in the Dutch World confirms that the existence of color prejudice in a predominantly "white" society does not depend on the presence of racial conflict or even a significant "colored" population. The origins are related to the complex interaction of evolving social, cultural, and economic phenomena.

This book rethinks security theory from a feminist perspective – uniquely, it engages feminism, security, and strategic studies to provide a distinct feminist approach to security studies. The volume explicitly works toward an opening up of security studies that would allow for feminist (and other) narratives to be recognized and taken seriously as security narratives. To make this possible, it presents a feminist reading of security studies that aims to invigorate the debate and radicalize critical security studies. Since feminism is a political project, and security studies are, at their base, about particular visions of the political and their attendant institutions, this is of necessity a political intervention. The book works through and beyond security studies to explore possible spaces where an opening of security, necessary to make way for feminist insights, can take place. Sekse en etniciteit impliceren fundamentele hiërarchieën in onze cultuur, die alle representatie doordesemen. Het zijn krachten die elke tekst van binnenuit besturen, conventies van representatie die zo vanzelfsprekend zijn, dat zij niet langer als conventies worden gezien. Dat verklaart waarom deze categorieën zo vaak als ‘natuurlijk’ worden beschouwd en daarmee in de analyse van cultuuruitingen over het hoofd worden gezien. Sekse en etniciteit impliceren echter niet minder dan een grammatica van verschil, volgens welke elke tekst en elk beeld van onze cultuur worden verbogen. In tekst gevat is een inleiding tot een kritiek van representatie. Het is een toegankelijk boek, dat gevoed is door een aantal van de klassieke en eigentijdse cultuurwetenschappelijke methoden en theorieën. Deze worden helder en toepassingsgericht uitgelegd. Maaike Meijer richt zich daarbij vooral op de methodiek van de kritische cultuuranalyse. De lezer/es treft veel voorbeelden van systematisch uitgevoerde analyses aan. In elk hoofdstuk staan een of meer teksten centraal, die de auteur zowel onderhoudend als expliciet behandelt. Steeds gaat het om de vraag hoe het tekstanalytisch instrumentarium in concerto werkt. Het begrip ‘tekst’ wordt daarbij ruim opgevat: het omvat niet alleen canonieke teksten uit de Nederlandse literatuur, maar ook foto’s, drinkliedjes en reclame-uitingen.
