Samen met Alexanders grootmoeder Kate Cold reizen Alexander en zijn vriendin Nadia naar Afrika voor een reportage over safari's. Ze komen terecht in hachelijke situaties, waaruit ze zich ten slotte op het nippertje uit weten te redden dankzij de jaguar en de adelaar, hun totemdieren. Tijdens hun avonturen beseffen Alexander en Nadia hoe zeer ze zich tot elkaar voelen aangetrokken, niet alleen als verwante zielen maar ook fysiek. Ook in dit laatste deel van de Jaguar- en Adelaartrilogie spelen thema's als respect voor het milieu en voor niet-westerse culturen, de verhouding tussen het rijke Westen en arme landen, de slavernij, de kindsoldaten, maar ook de diepere, spirituele kanten van de mens en zijn omgeving.
