Disorder plays a fundamental role in many natural and man-made systems that are of industrial and scienti?c importance. Of all the disordered systems, hete- geneous materials are perhaps the most heavily utilized in all aspects of our daily lives, and hence have been studied for a long time. With the advent of new - perimental techniques, it is now possible to study the morphology of disordered materials and gain a much deeper understanding of their properties. Novel te- niqueshavealsoallowedustodesignmaterialsofmorphologieswiththeproperties that are suitable for intended applications. With the development of a class of powerful theoretical methods, we now have the ability for interpreting the experimental data and predicting many properties of disordered materials at many length scales. Included in this class are ren- malization group theory, various versions of effective-medium approximation, percolation theory, variational principles that lead to rigorous bounds to the - fective properties, and Green function formulations and perturbation expansions. Thetheoreticaldevelopmentshavebeenaccompaniedbyatremendousincreasein the computational power and the emergence of massively parallel computational strategies. Hence, we are now able to model many materials at molecular scales and predict many of their properties based on ?rst-principle computations.

The interdisciplinary subject of random heterogeneous materials has experienced remarkable growth since the publication of the well-known monograph Statistical Con tinuum Theories by Beran ( 1968). Many of these advances, especially those concerning the statistical characterization of the microstructure and its effect on the physical prop erties of the material, have not been treated fully in any book. One of the intents of the present book is to fill this gap. This book also distinguishes itself in that it provides a unified rigorous framework to characterize the microstructures and macroscopic properties of the widely diverse types of heterogeneous materials found in nature and synthetic products. Emphasis is placed on providing foundational theoretical methods that can simultaneously yield results of practical utility. This book treats a wide breadth of topics, but the choice of subjects naturally reflects my own interests. The sheer enormity of the field has prevented me from covering many important topics. I apologize to those colleagues, known and unknown, who may not find enough of their own work cited in the ensuing pages.

Composite Materials, Volume 2: Mechanics of Composite Materials deals with the prediction of the deformation behavior and strength of composite materials. The book discusses the basic concepts in micromechanics, definition of effective moduli, and the influence of the number of fibers through-the-thickness within a single composite layer on the effective properties. The text also describes the exact moduli of anisotropie laminates; the elastic behavior of composites; and the viscoelastic behavior and analysis of composite materials. The elastoplastic behavior of composites, and the application of statistical theories for the determination of thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties of heterogeneous materials are also considered. The book further tackles the finite deformations of ideal fiber-reinforced composites; wave propagation and vibrations in directionally reinforced composites; and the phenomenological anisotropie failure criterion. The text also looks into the photoelastic investigation of composites. Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, aerospace engineers, and people involved in the study of non-metallic materials will find the book invaluable.

This book is concerned with the topical problems of mechanics of advanced composite materials whose mechanical properties are controlled by high-strength and high-stiffness continuous fibers embedded in polymeric, metal, or ceramic matrix. Although the idea of combining two or more components to produce materials with controlled properties has been known and used from time immemorial, modern composites were only developed several decades ago and have now found intensive application in different fields of engineering, particularly in aerospace structures for which high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are required. There already exist numerous publications that cover anisotropic elasticity, mechanics of composite materials, design, analysis, fabrication, and application of composite structures but the difference between this book and the existing ones is that this is of a more specific nature. It covers specific features of material behaviour such as nonlinear elasticity, plasticity, creep, and structural nonlinearity and discusses in detail the problems of material micro- and macro-mechanics that are only slightly touched in existing books, e.g. stress diffusion in a unidirectional material with broken fibers, physical and statistical aspects of fiber strength, coupling effects in anisotropic and laminated materials, etc.The authors are designers of composite structures who were involved in practically all the main Soviet and then Russian projects in composite technology, and the permission of the Russian Composite Center - Central Institute of Special Machinery (CRISM) to use in this book the pictures of structures developed and fabricated in CRISM as part of the joint research and design project is much appreciated.Mechanics and Analysis of Composite Materials consists of eight chapters progressively covering all structural levels of composite materials from their components through elementary plies and layers to laminates.

Numerical Modelling of Failure in Advanced Composite Materials comprehensively examines the most recent analysis techniques for advanced composite materials. Advanced composite materials are becoming increasingly important for lightweight design in aerospace, wind energy, and mechanical and civil engineering. Essential for exploiting their potential is the ability to reliably predict their mechanical behaviour, particularly the onset and propagation of failure. Part One investigates numerical modeling approaches to interlaminar failure in advanced composite materials. Part Two considers numerical modelling approaches to intralaminar failure. Part Three presents new and emerging advanced numerical algorithms for modeling and simulation of failure. Durability Of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics written by Jun Koyanagi and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-01 with Science categories.
Koyanagi presents a concise and practical guide to using a micromechanics approach to predict the strength and durability of unidirectionally aligned continuum carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). As the use of composite materials in becomes more widespread in various fields, material durability is becoming an increasingly important consideration, particularly with regard to UN Sustainable Development Goals. Using more durable composite materials would help with achieving these goals. Because the failure of composite materials proceeds via the accumulation of micro failures and micro damage, a micromechanics approach is indispensable for estimating precise durability. In this practical guide, Koyanagi describes this approach and explains the precise durability of the composite materials with regard to the time dependence of micro failures. This book first explains the strength and durability of unidirectionally aligned continuum CFRPs. It then individually addresses fiber, resin, and the interface between the two on the basis of their micromechanics and introduces these components’ time and temperature dependences. Koyanagi uses finite element analysis and theoretical models to integrate the characteristics of the three components to explain the macro properties of the CFRPs. Various characteristics regarding strength and durability of CFRPs are also presented. This book is a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry who work with composite materials. It will enable them to design composite structures, ensure their durability, evaluate them, and develop more durable composite materials.
