Search has been vital to artificial intelligence from the very beginning as a core technique in problem solving. The authors present a thorough overview of heuristic search with a balance of discussion between theoretical analysis and efficient implementation and application to real-world problems. Current developments in search such as pattern databases and search with efficient use of external memory and parallel processing units on main boards and graphics cards are detailed. Heuristic search as a problem solving tool is demonstrated in applications for puzzle solving, game playing, constraint satisfaction and machine learning. While no previous familiarity with heuristic search is necessary the reader should have a basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and calculus. Real-world case studies and chapter ending exercises help to create a full and realized picture of how search fits into the world of artificial intelligence and the one around us. - Provides real-world success stories and case studies for heuristic search algorithms - Includes many AI developments not yet covered in textbooks such as pattern databases, symbolic search, and parallel processing units

A large number of problems require the optimization of multiple criteria. These crite ria are often non-commensurate and sometimes conflicting in nature making the task of optimization more difficult. In such problems, the task of creating a combined opti mization function is often not easy. Moreover, the decision procedure can be affected by the sensitivity of the solution space, and the trade-off is often non-linear. In real life we traditionally handle such problems by suggesting not one, but several non-dominated solutions. Finding a set of non-dominated solutions is also useful in multistaged opti mization problems, where the solution of one stage of optimization is passed on to the next stage. One classic example is that of circuit design, where high-level synthesis, logic synthesis and layout synthesis comprise important stages of optimization of the circuit. Passing a set of non-dominated partial solutions from one stage to the next typically ensures better global optimization. This book presents a new approach to multi-criteria optimization based on heuristic search techniques. Classical multicriteria optimization techniques rely on single criteria optimization algorithms, and hence we are either required to optimize one criterion at a time (under constraints on the others), or we are asked for a single scalar combined optimization function. On the other hand, the multiobjective search approach maps each optimization criterion onto a distinct dimension of a vector valued cost structure.

Including contributions from leading experts in the field, this book covers applications and developments of heuristic search methods for solving complex optimization problems. The book covers various local search strategies including genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, tabu search and hybrids thereof. These methods have proved extraordinarily successful by solving some of the most difficult, real-world problems. At the interface between Artificial Intelligence and Operational Research, research in this exciting area is progressing apace spurred on by the needs of industry and commerce. The introductory chapter provides a clear overview of the basic techniques and useful pointers to further reading and to current research. The second section of the book covers some of the most recent and exciting developments of the basic techniques, with suggestions not only for extending and improving these but also for hybridizing and incorporating automatic adaption. The third section contains a number of case studies, surveys and comparative studies which span a wide range of application areas ranging from the classic Steiner tree problem to more practical problems arising in telecommunications and data analysis. The coverage of the latest research and the illustrative case studies will ensure that the book is invaluable for researchers and professionals with an interest in heuristic search methods.

AI is an emerging discipline of computer science. It deals with the concepts and methodologies required for computer to perform an intelligent activity. The spectrum of computer science is very wide and it enables the computer to handle almost every activity, which human beings could. It deals with defining the basic problem from viewpoint of solving it through computer, finding out the total possibilities of solution, representing the problem from computational orientation, selecting data structures, finding the solution through searching the goal in search space dealing the real world uncertain situations etc. It also develops the techniques for learning and understanding, which make the computer able to exhibit an intelligent behavior. The list is exhaustive and is applied now a days in almost every field of technology. This book presents almost all the components of AI like problem solving, search techniques, knowledge concepts, expert system and many more in a very simple language. One of the unique features of this book is inclusion of number of solved examples; in between the chapters and also at the end of many chapters. Real life examples have been discussed to make the reader conversant with the intricate phenomenon of computer science in general, and artificial intelligence in particular. The book is primarily developed for undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the proceedings of the 13th International C- puter Society of Iran Computer Conference (CSICC-2008). The conference has been held annually since 1995, except for 1998, when it transitioned from a year-end to first-quarter schedule. It has been moving in the direction of greater selectivity (see Fig.1) and broader international participation. Holding it in Kish Island this year represents an effort to further facilitate and encourage international contributions. We feel privileged to participate in further advancing this strong technical tradition. 60 50 40 30 20 10 0 Dec 23-26 Dec 23-25 Dec 23-25 Jan 26-28 Mar 8-10 Feb 21-23 Feb 28-30 Feb 23-26 Feb 16-19 Feb 15-18 Jan 24-26 Feb 20-22 Mar 9-11 1995 1996 1997 Iran 1999 2000 2001 U of 2002 Iran 2003 2004 2005 Iran 2006 IPM, 2007 2008 Sharif U Amirkabir U of Sharif U Shahid Isfahan, Telecom Ferdowsi Sharif U Telecom Tehran Shahid Sharif U of Tech, U of Tech, Sci/Tech, of Tech, Beheshti Isfahan Res. Real life problems are known to be messy, dynamic and multi-objective, and involve high levels of uncertainty and constraints. Because traditional problem-solving methods are no longer capable of handling this level of complexity, heuristic search methods have attracted increasing attention in recent years for solving such problems. Inspired by nature, biology, statistical mechanics, physics and neuroscience, heuristics techniques are used to solve many problems where traditional methods have failed. Data Mining: A Heuristic Approach will be a repository for the applications of these techniques in the area of data mining.
